What has the first year taught us? It takes a TEAM! Below is an amazing group of people who are committed to bringing great yoga to San Anselmo! We have officially been open a year and every day we get a little bit stronger and a little bit more flexible as a team and as a community. We are finding the connection with ourselves and plugging that right into the headlands as we take our yoga practices and hike, bike, swim and dance our way thru Marin County! From Woodacre to Sacramento to Boston to Washington DC to Naples Florida to New York City, Cleveland and Detroit! We have come together at this point in time to bring you “An Ordinary Love.” You know what I am talking about? As Coach Nick of B-Ball Breakdown would ask, Are you in???

“People pretend not to like grapes when the vines are too high for them to reach.” ― Marguerite de Navarre
A person with nothing to lose is dangerous. My gut check is usually, “what is the risk?” Essentially I am asking myself, “can I afford to lose this?” This is a question we should ask ourselves every time we loan our bike or car to a friend. Forget the car, can you afford to lose the friend? Will you still like them when they don’t fix the car they broke the way you would have? Can you afford to not have your car?
In some senses, this is why the government loans us money to get an education or buy a house, it is in society’s interest for you to have something so valuable you will not want to lose it. This shows up in our relationships with each other. We fear losing the relationship so we hold back, not knowing the other person wants us in all of our glory.
What do we have to lose? Trust. When I look at our community I appreciate how much you trust us. When I look at my personal relationships, I see they are all founded upon trust. Especially when I look to my kids Alex and Olivia, I see how much we are trying to create an understanding of trust. We are discussing a fragile relationship, a thin line that we walk on.
When the trust is lost, we have nothing to lose and we become free. We often call this trust, integrity. Our word is backed up by our actions. How we hold ourselves accountable, is what becomes our integrity. It is our professional standard. It is yoga. It is the union between our mind, body and relationships. As we sail thru this world, trust in your relationships and maintain your integrity when it is challenged. I am conscious that my most valuable asset is trust. As we make changes around here, hold us to that standard. Look around at your own life both personal and professional, if the trust is not there, you have nothing to lose…you are free.
“Now that she had nothing to lose, she was free.” Paulo Coelho
In some senses, Stephen Covey’s quote defines us. This is how we are building Marin Power Yoga. We are constantly re-imagining what will make this place an amazing space to be in. Yes, we draw from the past. Yes, we try and avoid mistakes we have made and do more of what worked. But yes, we are also trying to find something new, something we have always wanted yet never knew how to describe it.
Why forget the past? The successes and failures do not define us. It is not the past that will determine the future, it is simply part of our experience. As you look to the present moment in your life, create your contribution to the world from the depths of your soul. Figure out what you can give and share that with all of us! You are free!!!
“Live out of your imagination, not your history.” Stephen Covey
This is a GREAT few weeks with Michael Franti and Spearhead! I am kicking off the festivities with the AWESOME Franti Playlist (posted below) for the 6am Tuesday class I am subbing for Sean. I tested it tonight on the 6pm tonight and played it loud!!! Yes, it rocked!!!
Wednesday night Amy and I are headed to the Do It For The Love fundraiser at Sweetwater in Mill Valley. As the kids say, this is a “Hella” Expensive event. Small show with Michael, BOOM!
June 21st, tix are on sale at the Greek in Berkeley to see Michael Franti and Spearhead, there is a Yoga Class before the show at the Greek. Hell Yes!!! We are taking the kids and spending the afternoon in the East Bay!!!
Michael is an inspiring guy, from his music to touring around the world in bare feet to support kids without shoes. He is a Bay Area native who sings from the heart and will get your feet moving. If you love life, you will stir your soul and DANCE. Are you ready???

What Are We Working Towards?
Some days it feels like we are slowly moving thru a heavy fog. The air is cool and the mist is just thick enough that you don’t want to be in a car. You can see it moving, but you don’t want to move. There is safety in staying exactly where you are.
That feeling of safety is actually dangerous. It quickly becomes complacency and before we know it we are old. Most of us suffer from a rarely diagnosed disease called FOC…Fear Of Change. We prefer to stick with something we know, because the risk of not liking the unknown is not worth it. This always plagues me when I look at the menu for Sol Food. I want to order something different, but I know the chicken sandwich will deliver and if it doesn’t I can always guarantee joy with a generous dousing of their vinegary hot sauce.
What is the risk vs what is the reward? This is a normal question for us to ask ourselves multiple times a day. It should be the basis for most of our decisions! The real question is not about risk however, it is about degrees of joy and uncharted waters.
Sometimes we have to abandon our risk equation and simply focus on experience. Will the experience provide something new in our lives? Do we know the maximum benefit? I know the maximum joy I will experience with a crow pose, do I know the potential joy if I jump back into low plank? What about if I order a salad instead of the chicken sandwich?
We are sailing into uncharted waters at Marin Power Yoga and there is no question in my mind we will be hitting fog so thick the road will disappear. When in doubt we will check our compasses: Does this serve the greater good of the community? Will this create increased health and joy for our members? Are we doing this for the love of it? The answers will keep us on track. It takes a little bit of faith and a lot of courage to walk down the road without knowing what is in front of us. “Some days are better than other days, these days, life is better with you!” M. Franti.

From San Francisco to Berkeley to Marin, the yoga available in the Bay Area is off the charts amazing. All you have to do is show up. Get on your mat, do the work, sweat and shake. Your muscles will grow stronger and more flexible. Your mind will take care of itself.
**The above picture was shot of Dana Damara from my old iPhone, looking out at the Pacific Ocean with San Francisco and the Golden Gate bridge in the background. She is subbing in for her first class at Marin Power Yoga on Tuesday April 8 at 9:00am. Tap into your love and maybe you will find your freedom.
- Increased flexibility.
- Reduced chronic pain.
- Quicker injury recovery.
- Increased circulation (increased blood flow delivers nutrients & oxygen to muscle tissue & reduces restrictions, which helps muscle function).
- Deep relaxation & stress reduction; massage stimulates the release of endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers).
- Stimulation of the lymphatic system (which speeds up the elimination of wastes).

March is here, and we begin to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring. One of my favorite things about March is seeing all the spring blossoms that begin appearing everywhere. A normal commute along the usual roads, or a regular walking path around the neighborhood, can be brightened by the beautiful colors and flowers all around, if you just take a moment to notice them. March is always quite a rainy month, but without the rain, we wouldn’t have rainbows coloring the sky.
My most recent Power Yoga playlist is inspired by this changing of seasons from winter to spring. I searched for songs that I felt expressed beauty, light, and appreciation for something as simple as seeing a rainbow that appears one moment and is gone the next, or seeing the rays of sunlight peeking through thick, gray clouds.
Hope you can take a moment each day and see glimpses of the beautiful world we live in. Happy Spring!

The Gratitude Challenge kicked off this morning! Here are the details!!! 1) Monday – put your name up on the board, commit!!! 2) Become aware of when you are complaining. 3) Create Positive change in your language -Take Action!!! 4) Post up on the Blackboard what you are grateful for. 5) Extend this challenge to your friends and family and neighbors – we are all in this together.
This is our March Challenge to ourselves, to you as our community, to you as our family. What are you Grateful for today? Right Now? We are creating the positive lives we want to live, it starts with a feeling inside and extends to every part of our lives. Let’s Do This!!!
Everybody is working towards something. Some people are focused on earning and saving money, others on eliminating pain or improving their health and some on finding happiness. The road is the same for all of us, where ever you are in your journey, yet our perception of reality is tinted by what we are seeking. We all look out the window and see life happening, how we interpret events is what colors our experience.
It is too simple to point out that one person can describe today as mostly sunny while in the same breath someone else can describe the day as partly cloudy with a chance of rain. Maybe more relevant is how both people perceive the rain. It is easy during a drought year to appreciate the rain, yet do we see it as cleaning the air and washing away the past, creating a fresh start. The rain literally turns our hills green and brings life to the yards we walk, bike and drive by every day. If you want flowers, you want rain!!!
I have a love-hate affair with Pixar movies, they make me laugh and cry in the span of 90 minutes. The loss and separation of our childhood innocence brings tears to my eyes as I long to feel connected and grounded to something permanent. The joy of flight as Buzz Lightyear proclaims “we are falling with grace,” describes how I feel as I attempt something new, knowing I am going to swing and miss a few times before I hit it. The bumps in the road make the journey magical. It is our option to interpret the bumps as opportunities or as blocks slowing our journey. When you hit a bump on a bike, you can either slam into it and damage your wheel, or lift yourself up with all of your energy and catch some air!
I feel happiness every day as a choice. Even as I look over the handle bars of my bike and see bumps in the road, I see opportunity. The choice to dread the potential flat tire, the choice to weave around some bumps and fly over others. Sometimes I shake with frustration as I try to lift one leg in Crow, other times I jump back from Crow to Low Plank with ease. I am not sure if this is Flying or Falling with Grace, but at least I’m Enjoying The Ride…
Recently we have gone thru a lot of changes at Marin Power Yoga. Teachers have been dropped from the schedule and new teachers added. There are no simple answers when it comes to why we ask someone to leave. The immediate conclusion some people jump to is there must be something wrong with management. I thought about this question long and hard, deciding I was more concerned about the negative effects of staying with what was comfortable then people thinking I was making a mistake. There is something wrong with management that does not make hard decisions because of fear of the outcome. There is something very right about making a decision for your team and your community and acting from a place of compassion.
I love the cartoon above, it speaks to fear and how people respond to it. Fear of being left, fear of investing in people and most of all fear of decision making. How do we invest in our yoga teachers? It starts with time. We put our time into their classes and participate in a feedback process with them to keep their classes improving. We are starting to video select classes and review the class with the teachers so they can practice to their own class and evaluate it themselves. We take photos of our teachers to promote their classes and inspire our students. We attend trainings and are bringing talented teachers to work with our teachers and our community thru out the year. Most recently we brought in the very local team of Teo & Oli from EXLI to work with our team on leadership, we drilled into our values, these core values determine how we show up on our mats, with our family and our community.
We are investing time, money and brain power into our teaching team. Why? Because we want to be great. We want our yoga classes to be great. I love what we have built as a foundation and I can see clearly how much potential we have. Reaching that potential is not an accident, it is the result of our intentional action. Our teachers pursue their knowledge relentlessly. They get on their mats regularly and give each other feedback because they truly care about each other and you. It takes a lot of love and dedication to create something like Marin Power Yoga. Our teaching team reflects this behavior working together to help each teacher and each student realize their greatness. This is what Positive Collaboration looks like. This is how we work at MPY. See you on the other side.

Partner Yoga Flow Workshop THIS Saturday!
WHO: YOU!!! And bring someone you feel comfortable doing yoga with, such as a spouse, friend, sibling, parent, child, etc. No yoga or partner experience is necessary – just come with an open mind!
WHAT: A unique, playful, and fun 90-minute Yoga Flow workshop where we will breakdown and explore a series of partner poses that require you to stay connected with someone else from the beginning of class to the end. Unlike Partner-Assisted Yoga or AcroYoga, where only one individual is doing a yoga pose and the other is assisting or supporting, Partner Yoga poses are mutually beneficial. Both individuals will exert equal amounts of strength, control, and support, and at the same time will receive balance, depth, and openness in each pose.
WHEN: This Saturday, February 15th, from 9:30am-11:00am!
WHERE: Marin Power Yoga, of course!
WHY: Partner Yoga brings your practice to a whole different level!!!
· Give someone you care about an opportunity to try out yoga for the first-time, with you by their side the whole time (literally!).
· Learn trust and communication with one another beyond just words, but through connecting, listening, and feeling each other’s movements and breathing.
· Challenge your body and your mind as you play and discover how to find the perfect balance with your partner in each pose. Let go of control and allow yourself to lean on someone else for once. Or perhaps, let go of dependence, and be aware not to lean too much.
· Surrender to a deeper stretch than you would normally be able to achieve on your own – and be prepared, it will feel amazing!
· Most importantly, share a positive and energetic experience that may have you bursting out in laughter one second, then crying the next (just saying…) with someone you care about.
COST: Free for members and $20 drop-in for non-members
Save The Date!!! This Friday – February 7, 2014

“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” Maya Angelou
If somebody asked you, would you say you act courageously? Have you considered it a virtue before? What the hell is courage?
Courage is what enables you to walk thru the studio doors and find out what our yoga classes are all about. Courage is what gets you up in the morning, whether it is to make the kids lunch or to start your work day. Courage is what let’s you do that presentation in front of your team or simply invite a new friend on Facebook.
Our head works overtime telling us to be careful, proceed slowly and look before leaping. We all dig deep and act from a place of courage every single day, hundreds of times. Sometimes courage is simply stepping outside of the box you have drawn around yourself. Shedding what is known and comfortable. It took me a year to admit I like coconut, o.k really it took 38 years, but then it took a year to actually say out loud “I love coconut covered cup cakes.” It strangely doesn’t sound very courageous, but eating the first bite took years!
Forget the big stuff. Whether it is saving someone’s life out of a burning building or defending your sworn enemies right to freedom of speech, when the time is right you will have the courage to do the right thing. Start practicing now by acknowledging the details in your every day life that are possible because of your courage. Maybe it is letting your 3 year old walk up the stairs without you, attempting crow or hand stand in the middle of the room or trying something new on the menu even though it might not be your favorite. Be willing to be surprised by how strong you really are.
7:15-8:30pm on Thursday nights is now an Acro Flying Yoga club!!! This is a Donation based class with Donations going to Africa Yoga Project.
- Donate what you want.
- You can warm up however you want, there is no formal structure.
- Connect with people.
- Learn Acro.
- Have fun.
“You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible.” Bob Marley
Yoga empowers you to experience Love and Joy, it starts with getting on your mat. As you practice, your body grows stronger and more flexible. Thru the physical practice your mind gets clear and your heart opens.

Here is a another great recipe from Kia Sanford!
Wild Salmon Collard Wraps
- 8-10 ounces wild salmon, cut into 6 even strips (roughly 1/2 thick and 4 inches long)
- 3 large collard greens
- 2 nori sheets (each sheet cut into 8 rectangles)
- 1 carrot, thinly sliced
- 1 small fennel bulb, thinly sliced
- 1 large chunk of ginger, minced
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1⁄8 cup brown rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard
- 1.5 tablespoons wheat free tamari
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- cilantro leaves for garnish
- sunflower sprouts for garnish
To make the Marinade:
Whisk together the sesame oil, rice vinegar, mustard, and tamari. Stir in minced garlic and ginger. Place the sliced salmon into a bowl and add enough marinade to cover the fish. Marinate for 20-30 minutes
To Make the Collard Wraps:
Remove the stalk from the collards to give you 2 separate leaf pieces. Lay them onto your work surface, dark/shiny side down. Place 1-2 nori sheets on the middle of the collard leaf. Place 1 salmon strip onto the nori. Top with some carrots, fennel, cilantro leaves, and sprouts. Drizzle some of the marinade over everything. Roll the collards up (like a sushi roll)
Place salmon rolls onto a steamer dish. Steam for approximately 5-6 minutes. Serve alone or with brown rice and lime wedges

Detoxification and the New Year go hand in hand, and there are less enjoyable ways than a hands-on session to help release the accumulated toxins and metabolic wastes that accumulate through the year. Massage offers a great cleansing addition to a detox program by assisting in the movement of both the blood and the lymph.
The lymphatic system, along without circulatory system plays a vital role in helping to cleanse our bodies.
