Getting Lucky in 2018 Takes Consistent Practice

Are you looking for secrets to success in 2018? Is there a magic pill or change in diet or mantra that will give you everything you want in 2018? Probably not.

The secret to success at Marin Power Yoga is Consistent Practice!!! Look at our classes and the schedule and commit to a consistent practice, whether it is meditation, TRX, TKO, BootCamp, Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga or Yin Yoga. You can do any combination of classes, do them regularly! You will see our teachers work hard to show up regularly to their classes, they do this because their growth is tied to consistency also. When our teachers show up regularly to their classes, they become better teachers. Our teachers are students, their habits for success are what they have learned by experience. We ask our teachers to lead by example, so that you know we are living our truth!

Why do we have so many choices? Because we like to do a lot of different activities. We added TKO (kick boxing) in because we love Cardio! Our TRX and BootCamp classes bring pure Strength, Dance brings Cardio and Joy into our workouts…Yoga is the balance where we find, Strength, Flexibility and Stability! Try all of our classes, design a schedule you can keep to 85% of the time and show up to class…we will take care of the rest!

Yoga and Running

By Laura Richard

At first, yoga and running may not seem to have much in common; one consists of a variety of poses that take place on a mat as part of a personal practice, the other is a single repetitive motion across space often with some kind of competitive objective. And yet, for me, as an experienced ultra-marathoner they have become mutually constitutive. Actually, that’s not entirely true: While I can’t imagine logging consistent, injury-free miles without some kind of regular yoga, I CAN see myself in a flourishing yoga practice with no running at all.

Many runners “resort” to yoga as a physical solution to loosen chronically tight hips and hamstrings. And while overall muscular and joint flexibility bring enormous benefits for maintaining all-over mechanical health, for me, there are other arguably more valuable aspects of a regular yoga practice, especially for those who run on trails. Most obviously, the lunge asanas help develop the strength-to-weight power ratio crucial for hill climbing and descending. But almost as important, is core stability and balance: you need strong abdominals and spinal support for the full body moves and reflexes that technical single-track running demands—especially downhill. And this is developed not just through planks, but also in the many balance poses that recruit all of the smaller muscles and require your full, relaxed attention. After all, moving smoothly over rough, varied, and unpredictable terrain—and being able to catch yourself mid-fall after the inevitable trips and toe-grabs—is every bit essential to finishing a race as aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

And whether you are holding a bound Low Lunge or Dancer, or trying to get through a rough patch in a trail race, breath and focus are key. Cultivating awareness and control over our inhales and exhales can help to transcend physical discomfort and maintain positivity. Just as it seems counterintuitive to relax, breathe, and push up when we feel we are falling out of a pose, so too can lightness best serve our running. Even on the toughest stretches of trail, practicing landing gently, quietly, and quickly reduces the pounding and brings mental levity—it’s the running equivalent of how we want to live our lives on this earth: with as much spiritual joy and as little physical impact as possible.

With gratitude,

Laura

You Can Change

My dad died on FridayNovember 24, 2017, this photo was from 2 weeks ago, when I saw him last. He was suffering immensely from Alzheimer’s and his passing was natural and necessary. My Mom, Carol Foresta was by his side and my sister Molly Gia Foresta and I are in the Bronx sitting Shiva for the Italian raised Catholic Atheist…his sister, my Aunt Diane Materazzi will be joining us Tuesday to honor and remember my dad.

My Dad was a Lefty, to most people that is not a big deal, but as a basketball player with an accurate 3 pointer…he was deadly and earned the nickname “Shot Gun.” This followed him into the Military Police for the Air Force where he earned Sharp Shooter designation and served in Vietnam. War and the secrecy and lies surrounding the areas he fought in destroyed him mentally and emotionally. My dad used AA and therapy extensively to survive and be with us as a family.

When my dad cleaned up, he became a teacher in NYC for 25 years. He started in English and History and evolved
Into following his passion for art and teaching kids art. He spent his last years in retirement painting and taking art classes.

My dad taught me 3 important lessons in life. 1) You Can Do Anything. He stopped drinking alcohol because he wanted to stay in our family, from blacking out drunk to 35 years of sobriety. It wasn’t easy, some days he went to multiple AA meetings because he had to. He wrote plays, acted in the theater, screamed, yelled, fought and struggled with the ideas of freedom and justice.
2) Love. I met my dad when I was 7, he didn’t have to love me, but he did and I knew that. I also knew he was crazy, so who knows. I know that he loved my mom and understood that he could never be as smart as her, but by simply copying her he could be a respectable adult. Love makes you do stuff like that, become a respectable adult.
3) Good Music Is Important. My dad loved Jazz from Miles Davis to Thelonius Monk, he loved Motown and would sing the songs from the street corners of Brooklyn in his teens to our apartment in the Bronx growing up. I don’t know if he was a good singer, but he sang a lot better than my mom (that doesn’t tell you much beyond I got my singing from my Mom). He equally loved Crosby Stills and Nash and would turn up the radio if a Jimi Hendrix song came on. Every revolution needs music to tell the stories of our time and my dad loved the music of the revolution.

My dad was definitely not the easiest person for my Mom to Love, nor was he the best father. There were many loud crazy fights and rash decisions made in anger. When he couldn’t be with us he slept in his room, depressed. The struggle was real and the effects of war and PTSD were a life long battle that effected our family.

The biggest change in my life directly attributed to my Dad, is my Sister. I cried when he told me on the phone that she was born, disappointed I wouldn’t have a brother to play football with. I cried again 2 weeks later when I met her and realized she was a tiny baby (evidently I was not the sharpest tool in the shed as a kid). Having a Sister changed my life in a way only matched by getting married and having my own kids. My sister and I are hybrids, genetically mis-matched and raised differently yet exactly the same, we have been deeply loved by our parents and each other.

My dad loved Brooklyn, my Mom, his Sister, my Sister and I, his Grandkids…Music, Art, The Mets and Pro Basketball. He was crazy, yelled and struggled with anger and chemical imbalance. He loved our neighborhood and once he was with people, loved talking with them honestly. He didn’t have many friends and never called people on the phone nor emailed them, but he really did like the friends he had and would always update me about them.

My dad did yoga way before it was cool and would meditate in our living room early in the morning. He came to Marin Power Yoga for gentle yoga and bodywork and loved it. He tried TRX with me once and the Alzheimer’s had progressed past getting his body to learn new things. My dad loved his community here in The Bronx and equally loved visiting our community in San Anselmo. I said goodbye to my dad a year ago, before his health declined and I am grateful he has moved beyond the pain he was living with.

New App is Coming

Our new Mobile App has been submitted to Apple and we are waiting for approval! It has been a week and one more week is normal. Yes, accessing our new software from a website is a pain, from a different perspective it is amazing that you can see a schedule online, have updates to the minute and see a teacher’s bio and when they are teaching!

I keep thinking about how when we first did a Mobile app it seemed crazy and it took us what felt like forever to get people to download the app. 4 years later, the Mobile device is what most of us use for everything!!! This is a great time for me to practice patience, kindness and perseverance…while checking the app store twice a day to see if we have been approved!!!

95 classes a week, a spectacular TKO program and wide variety of yoga classes from Yin to Gentle to Power…Make your week amazing with us!

Back To School

We are going Back To School. We have launched new software to more effectively run Marin Power Yoga. If you already have an account, set your new Password Here. We are embracing the season of change and learning how to find our accounts, classes, sign in for classes. It is just as painful for us as it is for you. There is also something exciting about it. What if we can communicate better? What if we can have a better relationship with each other? What if our Core Values are the Foundation of Everything we do?

We are really excited about offering new classes and special series from TKO Fundamentals with Jordan to Meditation Workshops with Casey to The Pulse with Tiana and TurboKick with Natalie and Full Moon Yin classes with a Live SoundBath from Jamie and Gabe to a Deepen Your Power Leadership Series with Michael! We have 95 classes each week created to improve your health and increase your connection to your self and our community!

We are all capable of learning and we all learn in different ways. Part of our search is based in understanding how we each learn and applying that technique to varied information. This is where our growth is. We learn from each other. One of our Members, Jeff Hopkins, helped us by creating a document on how to update your credit card in your KarmaSoft account.  Another Member, Trish Owen, shared this link for resetting your password. We are stronger because of our talents and combined skills!!! Thank you to all of our Members and Guests growing with us thru this!

As you navigate the season of change whether it is saying goodbye to friends and kids, starting a new grade or school, or starting a new relationship, choose the words with which you speak to yourself kindly. Acknowledge what you are doing and believe in the positive outcomes you want to create. Your Community Is Here. We Believe In You. I have to tell myself this all of the time. I take very seriously the Trust you put in us and I commit to getting better at what we do every single day. We Are In This Life Together.

As Bill said to me the other day, Peace is an action. As is Love. We all must take action, practice what we want to create. I encourage you to start with what you can do. Pick up some trash on the street when you are walking, acknowledge your neighbor and hug people who need to know you love them. We must actively create the world we want to live in. Start Now.

Your Summer Vacation

This your Summer Vacation. It doesn’t matter whether you are working or not. You get this Summer. This chance to take the hike, explore a new beach, visit Healdsburg or Yountville or Sonoma or Napa, go out to dinner in San Francisco or simply take the Ferry to the City as a “treat.”

Everything slows down in Summer…except for the fun! Whether you bike up Mt. Tam, Hike to Cascade Falls or to the top of Mt. Baldy, run the Dipsea or try a new Yoga class or TRX or BootCamp. You get this Summer. This chance to find some more freedom, to re-invent yourself and to live a little bit better.

What is the secret? Nike told us years ago…Just Do It. Make the Plans, Break the Plans, Create the Plans! The only thing in the way is you!!! Give your self space to experience something new. You’ve got this summer!!!

Turning 4 – Our Birthday!

We are going to raise our glasses (probably plastic cups) up high, shake our butts low and move our feet!!! See your friends, neighbors and family, be prepared to have a GREAT time! contact amy@marinpoweryoga.com to reserve your ticket, half the tickets are already taken and you can not buy tickets at the door.

Remember Where You Came From

Looking back, we have come a long way! It took 6 months just to get our  lease, the landlord was ok with yogis, but not so thrilled with the idea of hot yoga. We negotiated and talked and came to an agreement that achieved both or our goals, we installed a floor and painted and opened a few weeks after signing. We started with 25 power yoga classes on the schedule, 5 of them 6am classes!!! 4 years later we have 95 classes a week! Yes, we have 40 Power Yoga Classes and added to the mix are Gentle Yoga, Yin, Meditation, Stop Drop and Dance, TRX, TKO (Kick Boxing) and we are testing Turbo Kick and Zumba!!!

How else have we grown in the last 4 years? We have teachers who have babies, Members have fallen out of love and found love, we have fought cancer and strokes, raised thousands of dollars for our local schools and national non-profits and the Africa Yoga Project, created a Yoga alliance certified Teacher Training Program for 200 hr and 300 hr. yoga teachers. We launched a Power Cycle program and killed the program. Our failures have been just as real as our successes!

What are we working on now? We are launching the Marin Yoga Foundation this month! The purpose of this Foundation is to provide Yoga, Meditation, Fitness, Leadership and Training to underserved women and children in Marin County. We want to extend the benefits of what we experience to our greater community, to people who can’t financially afford luxuries such as pre-emptive healthcare and who are willing to do the work. In some ways this is the biggest thing we have ever done. In other ways, this is all we do.

What is it like to be finally entering kindergarten? We still make mistakes, we rarely draw in between the lines, we are just as likely to fall down as we are to hit a home run and we have so much to learn. We have to face our fears, real and imaginary, every time we start something new. We have to get up every time we are knocked down. We have faith there is light at the end of the tunnel, especially when it seems impossibly dim. We believe in the power of Kindness, Compassion and LOVE.

As we finish our 4th year, I am so grateful to our team of teachers and support staff who keep Marin Power Yoga evolving, our Members who witness us change in real time, all of the guest teachers who have taken time out of their lives to share their knowledge and experience with us, our amazing Town of San Anselmo (from fellow residents to the local government) and most of all to the Littles – the kids who remind us of the importance of improving our Health and of living a life of Service and Joy.

We Are Stronger Together!!!

Why I Meatless Monday…

I have given this a lot of thought over the last few months. Why should I begin to change my Monday’s? Why should I go meatless? Can one day a week of not eating meat really make a difference?

Meatless Monday’s are self explanatory. Don’t indulge in eating meat, of any type, every Monday. Given the research I have done, refraining from eating meat one day a week makes a huge impact not only with saving animals, but with environmental impacts, as well as body health.

If saving animals isn’t enough to want to take a pause on meat then maybe this will change your mind. Research shows that eating a plant-based diet, especially those low in processed meats can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Eating more veggies, fruits and whole grains can lower your risk for heart disease, curb obesity and limit cancer. All that aside, a change in your diet can help you live longer, stronger and happier. Now who doesn’t want that?

If I haven’t got you hooked yet, maybe your wallet will. Cutting back on meat indulgence will help keep money in your wallet. Meat is expensive. The amount of money it takes to produce meat; feed, transportation, etc., is a lot. The flip side of it, healthcare expenses. As stated above, the health reasons for cutting back are strong enough, but if you think about all those potential doctor bills, well I’ll skip a day of meat once a week for some clean, lean and green eating.

Lastly, let’s do it for our environment. If we all cut one day out of eating meat, we could rapidly reduce water usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and our dependence on fuel. Approximately 1,850 gallons of water is what it takes to produce 1 pound of ground beef, and only 39 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of greens.

The final kicker … do it to save a life. To often we live in an out of sight out of mind mentality. We don’t do the dirty work, so we don’t see what happens. I started following “The Humane League” on Instagram. It’s not always the happiest of pictures, but it is a reality. I like to keep it real, with all that I see on social media, it’s good to have a reminder of what is going on in that, out of sight out of mind location.

So go ahead, jump in with me and ride the wave with Meatless Mondays! Your mind, body and spirit will thank you💖

Just A Spoonful Of … What?!

This cold/flu season has been a doozy.  It has hit us all at one point or another. Whether your sickness lasted for long or short periods, regardless it has sucked! The weather has a major factor on our physical and mental health.  Here are a few tips to stay healthy as the weather and our bodies make the transition from Winter into Spring.

  1. Get out! Whenever you see the warmth of the sun, step outside and bask in it.  Not only does it feel amazing, but exposing your body to sunlight aides in the production of Vitamin D which is essential for your body.  Vitamin D helps to boost the immune system.  So fill that life with some sunshine.

  2. Buzz Buzz Buzz! Their sting may be powerful but their honey packs a whole other punch, throwing it right at your allergies.  What?! That’s right. Add a tablespoon of LOCAL honey to your tea, oatmeal or just straight down the hatch during allergy season and it will help those nasty watery/itchy eyes and runny noses.  If you don’t like the sweeter side of life, go to your local health food store and grab some straight Bee Pollen.  Add it to your smoothies. Yum!

  3. ACV – Apple Cider Vinegar.  I live by this stuff.  100% Raw, Organic, Non-GMO, Unfiltered.  I take 1 tablespoon every day.  ACV is said to help with acid reflux, cures (yeast), regulates pH levels, relieves constipation, promotes good gut bacteria, detoxes the body, lowers blood pressure, balances blood sugar, fights allergies. Clears sinuses, fights colds, and has been researched and found to help fight cancer.

Ok. So … Are you thinking what I’m thinking?! Put the tea kettle on, grab your favorite mug, add a tablespoon of local honey, a tablespoon of ACV, a squeeze of lemon or maybe some ginger tea and go sit outside in soak up the sun!  Have a beautiful day!

3 Lessons From Trolls

I had a sick day Sunday. Nothing was wrong. I woke up, had a couple of bagels, posted something on Facebook and passed out. I opened my eyes a little after 2pm and mumbled to Amy that I needed a sub and slept for a few more hours. I hate missing my class and I kind of hate sleeping. Maybe it was a sickness, maybe it was basic depression.

Amy and Olivia wanted to watch Trolls, they rented it and watched it while I was sleeping and were already eager to watch it again (3 short hours later).
I Love Trolls.

Glad we cleared that up. Seriously, I laughed, I cried, I remembered why we tell stories, why we believe and most important of all I felt BETTER.

3  Lessons from Trolls

  1. Hug More – Yes, every 30 minutes sounds like a great minimum requirement. It doesn’t matter if you need a hug or you have a hug to give, everybody wins.
  2. Happiness Is Inside ALL Of Us. You have everything you need to be happy. Let go of all of that crazy shit you say in your head and allow yourself to be happy. There is nothing you can eat, buy or be given that will make you happier than you can make yourself (awkward?).
  3. Sing and Dance When Ever Possible. This really should be obvious to all of us by now. WTF are we so boring, reserved and proper for? It took so much magic and incredible timing to get us here, right now. The fastest way to feel that energy is to SING and/or DANCE! You always feel better when you are dancing.

*This starts with me, with you, with all of us. We have to choose to be happy, to take actions that create joy in our lives. You can start by joining us at Stop Drop and Dance with Grace. Come Dancing with us and DJ Gavin Hardkiss at Love Won Another on Saturday Night at 19 Broadway. Better yet, Save the Date May 13th, 2017 we are having a Dance Party at the Log Cabin. Tickets are limited and $20. Start With You!

Slowing Down

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” Wayne Dyer

You don’t have to look very hard to see the signs that you need to slow down. For me it shows up physically first in the form of a sore low back or a twitch or swelling. Then my emotions scatter and I struggle to find my kind voice with myself and with others. It is quickly a lose-lose situation, followed by feelings of guilt and inadequacy.

Why after all these years do I need to be hit in the head by the signs, wouldn’t you think by now I could see them 50 feet away and prepare myself a little? Maybe I did see the signs, maybe I didn’t believe them or maybe I didn’t want to believe them. Either way, the signs were there.

What does it mean to slow down? For all of us it is different. Some need to discover Yin Yoga and find out what it is like to breathe in an uncomfortable position for 2 minutes. Some need to sweat, shake and stand on their hands for everything to get quiet and feel ok. Some need to meditate for 30 seconds, others for 30 minutes. In some senses, it is the same for all of us…one hour in the day to take care of ourselves.

It doesn’t really matter what you do, as long as what you do, is for you. Take a walk or make it a hike or even a run. Bike thru town on your cruiser or climb the mountain so you can fly down it appreciating your choice of hardtail or full suspension. Do 40 laps at the pool or 9 holes at the club. Find your core in TRX or unleash you inner demon in TKO. You can find your yoga practice on the mat or everywhere you go. It starts with you.

Slow Down. Figure out what that means for you and bring more of it into your life. Or bring less of it. You know what I mean.

Marin Power Yoga Teacher Training

TeacherTrainingPoster2016

It is crazy how life unfolds itself, all in its own timing.  You cannot always plan out the future and you definitely cannot predict the future.  All you can do is live your life and let the dots connect.

As a little girl, I remember setting up my stuffed animals on the bed and I would be the teacher.  I read stories to them, taught lessons, and I even made homework assignments for them to complete.

Somehow along the way I had a belief that being a businesswoman would be way flashier and make more money, so I pursued that route in college.  And for some reason I thought I would prove something by finishing college in 3 years, so I took all the classes I needed to graduate.  But then I started dating my husband that 3rd year in college and then realized, why rush to graduate?  I will be working the rest of my life… why not enjoy this college life for one more year?  So I stayed a 4th year and that was the best decision.

I ended up traveling abroad to Hong Kong for a semester, taking a bunch of random classes like Mandarin Chinese and Advanced Piano, and I also enrolled in Teacher Education classes where I was required to volunteer every week in a classroom.  I was reminded then of my true passion to become a teacher, so after college, I said goodbye to my Management Science degree and continued to graduate school to get my Elementary Education Credential and Masters in Education with an emphasis in Technology.

I taught Kindergarten and first grade for 9 years and to balance out the stresses of teaching a bunch of 5 year olds who often don’t listen, I also taught yoga and fitness classes to adults in the evenings.  I became a certified E-RYT Yoga Teacher, ACE Group Fitness Instructor, TRX Instructor, PiYo and TurboKick Instructor.  It was a great balance, and after I had my first child, I decided to take a leave from teaching public schools and be a part-time mom, part-time fitness and yoga teacher.

Fast forward 5 years later, and I am blessed to teach at the Bay Club Marin and am the Director of Operations and TRX at Marin Power Yoga.  In addition to the 15 classes I teach each week, I am so excited that this coming Monday, I will be leading my first 200 Hour Teacher Training program!!!  I definitely never imagined I would be where I am now, but somehow this is the perfect blend of my Education and Yoga/Fitness background.  Instead of stuffed animals and 5-year-olds, I get to teach adults who are passionate about yoga like me!  I am far from being an expert, but I am happy to be a guide in someone else’s journey.

Humbled… grateful… excited.  Happy 2016 everyone.

Meditation Coming To Marin Power Yoga – September 22nd!

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” John Muir

We are launching our first Meditation and Mindfulness program at Marin Power Yoga! Monday September 22, 2014! 7:15 pm at MPY!

Teo and Oli led our “Values” program in the Fall and they are back to launch our Dharma Talks and Group Meditation! To find out more about this dynamic duo check out http://exli.org – they are incredible!

Why now? Because autumn is a time of change. It takes a lot of hard work to change your body. It takes a lot of letting go to expand your mind. Yes, you can read books and sit on your floor and meditate at home. Yes, you should! But you should also connect with a group of people, SHARE a thought, get tips for meditating and PRACTICE.  I am always reminded of how strong we are together. What we accomplish as a group, is possible for everyone…Let’s Do This!

This is included with your membership or a regular Drop-In.
