Yoga Teacher Training starts January 22 2018

Our 2018, 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training starts January 22, 2018! Yes, you will be certified with Yoga Alliance, but more importantly you will be qualified and capable of teaching Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Yin Yoga classes!!!

Why do Yoga Teacher Training? Because it is a great way to learn more about yourself. Yes, you will learn about the physical practice, the philosophical and mystical practice, anatomy, sequencing, alignment and teaching methodology. That is the structure we use to deepen our relationship with our self. By the end of the training, you will be able to teach private classes, small group classes and have the skills to build those classes into large classes!

SugarFoot is Ready For The Holidays

SugarFoot is ready for the Holidays in San Anselmo, Are You? Cruising thru town, the shops are open and San Anselmo is a living representation of small town America. From holiday cheer to creative presents…you will see workshops and clothing at Neve & Hawk to women’s clothing at SideKicks and TumbleWeed and Kismet to something race at Chadwicks and men’s gifts at Utility Goods or little stocking stuffers at Fig Garden and Jewels at Embellish and treats for the dogs at Dogville.

It is so tempting to embed yourself on your couch with a glass of wine and a cozy fire…save that for the 24th! The restaurants are open and filled with energy! Our local food scene in Marin has taken a huge step into primetime foodie heaven with amazing choices from Valenti to Pizzalina to Cucina to LaApparte to Ensalata to MadCap to MHBB and appetizing rewards for those who venture to Picco or Gia in Larkspur to El Paseo in Mill Valley. Even the more normal fair of Taco Janes or Creekside will bring you warm smiles and cold drinks!

We love being in San Anselmo and our retail shop is a great place to ask questions about Yoga, TRX, TKO, BootCamp or find a new pair of Leggings or Yoga Pants! We have t-shirts for littles and “yoga joes” to tanks and yoga mats for adults. More importantly, we have a space for you to be you. Stop in and say hello on your adventures around town…wave hello to your neighbor and sing a happy holidaze to all you see!

For the first time ever we are launching an Annual Membership! The price is $840 per Adult Membership and is good for all of 2018. Your annual Membership comes with 2 hours of BodyWork and a complimentary MPY Shirt of your choice! This deal must be paid for in Cash or Check and can be arranged with amy@marinpoweryoga.com – Amy can also work out deals for your Juniors or put together a package for an Adult/Junior that works for you!

Why are we doing packages? Our end of year costs and start of January are extraordinary, from facility and equipment upgrades to state filings and taxes. Your annual Membership reduces our costs and helps us to transition thru the season with ease. We created this package to be mutually beneficial, if you have different or better ideas we want to know!

Yoga and Running

At first, yoga and running may not seem to have much in common; one consists of a variety of poses that take place on a mat as part of a personal practice, the other is a single repetitive motion across space often with some kind of competitive objective. And yet, for me, as an experienced ultra-marathoner they have become mutually constitutive. Actually, that’s not entirely true: While I can’t imagine logging consistent, injury-free miles without some kind of regular yoga, I CAN see myself in a flourishing yoga practice with no running at all.

Many runners “resort” to yoga as a physical solution to loosen chronically tight hips and hamstrings. And while overall muscular and joint flexibility bring enormous benefits for maintaining all-over mechanical health, for me, there are other arguably more valuable aspects of a regular yoga practice, especially for those who run on trails. Most obviously, the lunge asanas help develop the strength-to-weight power ratio crucial for hill climbing and descending. But almost as important, is core stability and balance: you need strong abdominals and spinal support for the full body moves and reflexes that technical single-track running demands—especially downhill. And this is developed not just through planks, but also in the many balance poses that recruit all of the smaller muscles and require your full, relaxed attention. After all, moving smoothly over rough, varied, and unpredictable terrain—and being able to catch yourself mid-fall after the inevitable trips and toe-grabs—is every bit essential to finishing a race as aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

And whether you are holding a bound Low Lunge or Dancer, or trying to get through a rough patch in a trail race, breath and focus are key. Cultivating awareness and control over our inhales and exhales can help to transcend physical discomfort and maintain positivity. Just as it seems counterintuitive to relax, breathe, and push up when we feel we are falling out of a pose, so too can lightness best serve our running. Even on the toughest stretches of trail, practicing landing gently, quietly, and quickly reduces the pounding and brings mental levity—it’s the running equivalent of how we want to live our lives on this earth: with as much spiritual joy and as little physical impact as possible.

Your Yoga Mat

Your yoga mat is the least important part of your yoga practice and the most important. When I am feeling cynical I remind myself nobody used yoga mats 2,000 years ago nor did they use them 100 years ago. Why spend so much money on a rubber yoga mat?

The primary reason is comfort. A nice yoga mat is more enjoyable to practice on. I love the Lulu yoga mats because I never slip on the mat, I feel steady and that gives me the confidence to go a little bit further in my practice. Slipping on a yoga mat can be dangerous to little muscles, more relevantly you should not slip on your yoga mat!

We discover amazing things on our mat…from how to heal an injury to how our body works to clearing our minds and feeling good again. Make sure you have a decent mat and do the work to find a consistent yoga practice, it will improve the quality of your life.

New App is Coming

Our new Mobile App has been submitted to Apple and we are waiting for approval! It has been a week and one more week is normal. Yes, accessing our new software from a website is a pain, from a different perspective it is amazing that you can see a schedule online, have updates to the minute and see a teacher’s bio and when they are teaching!

I keep thinking about how when we first did a Mobile app it seemed crazy and it took us what felt like forever to get people to download the app. 4 years later, the Mobile device is what most of us use for everything!!! This is a great time for me to practice patience, kindness and perseverance…while checking the app store twice a day to see if we have been approved!!!

Back To School

We are going Back To School. We have launched new software to more effectively run Marin Power Yoga. If you already have an account, set your new Password Here. We are embracing the season of change and learning how to find our accounts, classes, sign in for classes. It is just as painful for us as it is for you. There is also something exciting about it. What if we can communicate better? What if we can have a better relationship with each other? What if our Core Values are the Foundation of Everything we do?

We are really excited about offering new classes and special series from TKO Fundamentals with Jordan to Meditation Workshops with Casey to The Pulse with Tiana and TurboKick with Natalie and Full Moon Yin classes with a Live SoundBath from Jamie and Gabe to a Deepen Your Power Leadership Series with Michael! We have 95 classes each week created to improve your health and increase your connection to your self and our community!

We are all capable of learning and we all learn in different ways. Part of our search is based in understanding how we each learn and applying that technique to varied information. This is where our growth is. We learn from each other. One of our Members, Jeff Hopkins, helped us by creating a document on how to update your credit card in your KarmaSoft account.  Another Member, Trish Owen, shared this link for resetting your password. We are stronger because of our talents and combined skills!!! Thank you to all of our Members and Guests growing with us thru this!

As you navigate the season of change whether it is saying goodbye to friends and kids, starting a new grade or school, or starting a new relationship, choose the words with which you speak to yourself kindly. Acknowledge what you are doing and believe in the positive outcomes you want to create. Your Community Is Here. We Believe In You. I have to tell myself this all of the time. I take very seriously the Trust you put in us and I commit to getting better at what we do every single day. We Are In This Life Together.

As Bill said to me the other day, Peace is an action. As is Love. We all must take action, practice what we want to create. I encourage you to start with what you can do. Pick up some trash on the street when you are walking, acknowledge your neighbor and hug people who need to know you love them. We must actively create the world we want to live in. Start Now.

Your Summer Vacation

This your Summer Vacation. It doesn’t matter whether you are working or not. You get this Summer. This chance to take the hike, explore a new beach, visit Healdsburg or Yountville or Sonoma or Napa, go out to dinner in San Francisco or simply take the Ferry to the City as a “treat.”

Everything slows down in Summer…except for the fun! Whether you bike up Mt. Tam, Hike to Cascade Falls or to the top of Mt. Baldy, run the Dipsea or try a new Yoga class or TRX or BootCamp. You get this Summer. This chance to find some more freedom, to re-invent yourself and to live a little bit better.

What is the secret? Nike told us years ago…Just Do It. Make the Plans, Break the Plans, Create the Plans! The only thing in the way is you!!! Give your self space to experience something new. You’ve got this summer!!!

Full Moon Yin with Sound Meditation

Donating to the ACLU

We have been doing a lot of fundraising this year! Our first official fundraiser of the year was for the ACLU! As a community, we raised over $1,400 for the Northern California Chapter between cash raised, checks mailed in and online donations. Why are we active in politics and fundraising? It starts with the complex yogic philosophy of Ahimsa, commonly described as Do No Harm. We recognize that if we do not take action to support people, they will be harmed. In other words, by not doing anything you can cause a lot of harm. We are Yogis, we take action to help ourselves and everyone else that we can. Sometimes this shows up as picking up a piece of glass on the sidewalk, other times by helping someone across the street. We are going to do our best to create awareness and “put our money where our mouth is” and raise money to support causes that actively help people and especially women. Be The Change.

3 Lessons From Trolls

I had a sick day Sunday. Nothing was wrong. I woke up, had a couple of bagels, posted something on Facebook and passed out. I opened my eyes a little after 2pm and mumbled to Amy that I needed a sub and slept for a few more hours. I hate missing my class and I kind of hate sleeping. Maybe it was a sickness, maybe it was basic depression.

Amy and Olivia wanted to watch Trolls, they rented it and watched it while I was sleeping and were already eager to watch it again (3 short hours later).

Glad we cleared that up. Seriously, I laughed, I cried, I remembered why we tell stories, why we believe and most important of all I felt BETTER.

3  Lessons from Trolls

  1. Hug More – Yes, every 30 minutes sounds like a great minimum requirement. It doesn’t matter if you need a hug or you have a hug to give, everybody wins.
  2. Happiness Is Inside ALL Of Us. You have everything you need to be happy. Let go of all of that crazy shit you say in your head and allow yourself to be happy. There is nothing you can eat, buy or be given that will make you happier than you can make yourself (awkward?).
  3. Sing and Dance When Ever Possible. This really should be obvious to all of us by now. WTF are we so boring, reserved and proper for? It took so much magic and incredible timing to get us here, right now. The fastest way to feel that energy is to SING and/or DANCE! You always feel better when you are dancing.

Slowing Down

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” Wayne Dyer

You don’t have to look very hard to see the signs that you need to slow down. For me it shows up physically first in the form of a sore low back or a twitch or swelling. Then my emotions scatter and I struggle to find my kind voice with myself and with others. It is quickly a lose-lose situation, followed by feelings of guilt and inadequacy.

Why after all these years do I need to be hit in the head by the signs, wouldn’t you think by now I could see them 50 feet away and prepare myself a little? Maybe I did see the signs, maybe I didn’t believe them or maybe I didn’t want to believe them. Either way, the signs were there.

What does it mean to slow down? For all of us it is different. Some need to discover Yin Yoga and find out what it is like to breathe in an uncomfortable position for 2 minutes. Some need to sweat, shake and stand on their hands for everything to get quiet and feel ok. Some need to meditate for 30 seconds, others for 30 minutes. In some senses, it is the same for all of us…one hour in the day to take care of ourselves.

It doesn’t really matter what you do, as long as what you do, is for you. Take a walk or make it a hike or even a run. Bike thru town on your cruiser or climb the mountain so you can fly down it appreciating your choice of hardtail or full suspension. Do 40 laps at the pool or 9 holes at the club. Find your core in TRX or unleash you inner demon in TKO. You can find your yoga practice on the mat or everywhere you go. It starts with you.

Slow Down. Figure out what that means for you and bring more of it into your life. Or bring less of it. You know what I mean.

Marin Power Yoga Teacher Training

It is crazy how life unfolds itself, all in its own timing.  You cannot always plan out the future and you definitely cannot predict the future.  All you can do is live your life and let the dots connect.

As a little girl, I remember setting up my stuffed animals on the bed and I would be the teacher.  I read stories to them, taught lessons, and I even made homework assignments for them to complete.

Somehow along the way I had a belief that being a businesswoman would be way flashier and make more money, so I pursued that route in college.  And for some reason I thought I would prove something by finishing college in 3 years, so I took all the classes I needed to graduate.  But then I started dating my husband that 3rd year in college and then realized, why rush to graduate?  I will be working the rest of my life… why not enjoy this college life for one more year?  So I stayed a 4th year and that was the best decision.

I ended up traveling abroad to Hong Kong for a semester, taking a bunch of random classes like Mandarin Chinese and Advanced Piano, and I also enrolled in Teacher Education classes where I was required to volunteer every week in a classroom.  I was reminded then of my true passion to become a teacher, so after college, I said goodbye to my Management Science degree and continued to graduate school to get my Elementary Education Credential and Masters in Education with an emphasis in Technology.

I taught Kindergarten and first grade for 9 years and to balance out the stresses of teaching a bunch of 5 year olds who often don’t listen, I also taught yoga and fitness classes to adults in the evenings.  I became a certified E-RYT Yoga Teacher, ACE Group Fitness Instructor, TRX Instructor, PiYo and TurboKick Instructor.  It was a great balance, and after I had my first child, I decided to take a leave from teaching public schools and be a part-time mom, part-time fitness and yoga teacher.

Fast forward 5 years later, and I am blessed to teach at the Bay Club Marin and am the Director of Operations and TRX at Marin Power Yoga.  In addition to the 15 classes I teach each week, I am so excited that this coming Monday, I will be leading my first 200 Hour Teacher Training program!!!  I definitely never imagined I would be where I am now, but somehow this is the perfect blend of my Education and Yoga/Fitness background.  Instead of stuffed animals and 5-year-olds, I get to teach adults who are passionate about yoga like me!  I am far from being an expert, but I am happy to be a guide in someone else’s journey.

Humbled… grateful… excited.  Happy 2016 everyone.

Weekend Workshop: Geshe Lama Ahbay Rinpoche and Marni Task

We have a special morning planned for you this Saturday, June 27th!  We have cancelled our 8am Vinyasa class, and at 9:30am we will receive a Blessing and Dharma Talk by Geshe Lama Ahbay Rinpoche, followed by a Master Class with Cleveland Yoga’s Marni Task.

Spinning Starts at Marin Power Yoga December 11 2014 – Get Some Cardio!

What??? Yes!!! Spinning comes to Marin Power Yoga!!! We are bringing Marin Fit to 141 Tunstead Ave! Starting December 11, 2014, we will have 15 Spin classes a week at MPY! Yes, Membership is $70 a month for UNLIMITED YOGA and SPINNING!

We LOVE the team at Marin Fit and believe the additional cardio classes will support you riding up the mountain, running the trails, dancing in the streets and of course advancing your yoga practice! Welcome!!! We are gathering at the studio at 7:15pm on Wednesday September 3rd to dive into planning our Clean Living Series!

It is so exciting to come together on our journey toward a healthier lifestyle. Whether you are just interested in learning how to eat a less processed diet or you are interested in shedding body fat, you are in the right place. Through eating “clean” and increasing lean muscle, we will feel so amazing and have energy to burn! And we’ll look better, too.

A positive mindset is really so important so I don’t want us to think about what we are taking out of our diets, as much as what swaps we are making and what we are actually adding. I like to call these “swapportunities.” Along our journey you will discover so many simple ways to replace old habits with new exciting choices!

WHAT IS CLEAN EATING?

The soul of clean eating is consuming food in its most natural state, or as close to it as possible. It is not a diet; it’s a lifestyle approach to food and its preparation, leading to an improved life – one meal at a time.

Eat five to six times a day:
Three meals and two to three small snacks. Include a lean protein, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and a complex carbohydrate with each meal. This keeps your body energized and burning calories efficiently all day long.

Drink at least two liters of water a day:
Preferably from a reusable canteen, not plastic; we’re friends of the environment here!
Get label savvy:
Clean foods contain just one or two ingredients. Any product with a long ingredient list is human-made and not considered clean.

Avoid processed and refined foods:
This includes white flour, sugar, bread and pasta. Enjoy complex carbs such as whole grains instead.

Know thy enemies:
Steer clear of anything high in saturated and trans fats, anything fried or anything high in sugar.

Shop with a conscience:
Consume humanely raised and local meats.
Choose organic whenever possible
If your budget limits you, make meat, eggs, dairy and the Dirty Dozen your organic priorities.

Consume healthy fats:
Try to have essential fatty acids, or EFAs, every day.

Learn about portion sizes:
Work towards eating within them.

Reduce your carbon footprint:
Eat produce that is seasonal and local. It is less taxing on your wallet and our environment.

Slow down and savor:
Never rush through a meal. Food tastes best when savored. Enjoy every bite!
Take it to go:
Pack a cooler for work or outings so you always have clean eats on the go.

Make it a family affair:
Food is a social glue that should be shared with loved ones. Improve the quality of your family’s life along with your own.

EXERCISE

Exercise is the other piece of the puzzle. It’s very important to move every day. These are my recommendations:

Cardio 3x per week (intervals for speed, hills for strength, and one longer slower workout for endurance and mental well being)

Strength Training 2x per week (Building lean muscle is the ultimate fountain of youth. It is suggested that we lose 1-2% of muscle mass per year as we grow older. This can be offset by strength training. See the article from the Mayo Clinic.)

Yoga — as much as you possibly can! Yoga feeds your body and your soul.

THE PLAN

We will break down the six week program in 2 week blocks. For the first block, we will work on getting the basics down and keeping our food pretty simple. As long as you follow the basic tenets of clean eating you should be just fine, but to help those that would like more guidance I am including 5 basic ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snack ideas for in between. As we progress, I will share tons of recipe ideas and ways to make this really fun. I spend tons of time in the kitchen and this is my passion, so I can’t wait to share!

For the first 2 week block, I strongly suggest eliminating alcohol from our diet. The body reads this as sugar and we are trying to break our sugar habit. Alcohol also slows the metabolism and reduces your willpower to resist things we know aren’t good for us. This is a great “swapportunity”…Fill your wine glass with Pelligrino, a splash of cranberry and a lime. It feels kind of the same and you are taking care of yourself. Give it a try!
We begin on Monday September 8th, so spend these next days getting prepared. Clean out your pantry, go grocery shopping and get your family on board. This is going to be a great journey toward our healthiest selves!
