Forgive

Forgive.

Do you remember that bumper sticker? “If you aren’t angry, you aren’t paying attention.” Seriously. WTF is happening in our country? Yesterday was heartbreaking, looking at the images and reading what happened to George Floyd, it is hard to justify the cruelty and racism even as I can imagine the fear and challenges that comes with being a police officer. Everybody makes mistakes, most of us are fortunate it isn’t captured on video.

If you have been with us over the last few months, you have seen our mistakes, from streams not working, to errors on the website and bad links. If you are really lucky, you may have gotten a good laugh as we bicker with each other under the stress of trying to get the camera right or the stream live. Even these small acts of anger require a softening, an easing into forgiveness.

Stress. Don’t act like you don’t know what I am talking about. Each and every one of us has experienced a lifetime of stress in the last 9 weeks. Seriously. This is my first pandemic, but it feels pretty normal to be stressed and freaking out randomly. Teachers, students, parents, children…the changes we have made pale in comparison to the changes we still have to make.

That said, I have GREAT news. You can NOT start now. We are deep in the analyze phase of this experience, we all need to deepen our understanding of what is happening, do risk analysis and determine options, take a LONG hike in nature and reflect upon our situation. Sit with it, listen to the sounds of the wind swaying the tall trees gently in the heat that foreshadows a long dry summer. Lay on the ground and allow the earth to support your body, relax your muscles and allow gravity to find the balance of being for you, as clouds float overhead morphing into animals and becoming the patterns we aspire to in our lives.

Forgive. Yourself. Start with you. All of the missed goals, workouts, diets, zoom meetings, baking experiments, whatever. We are trying to make a massive shift in our society and it will not happen if you continue to beat yourself up about the past. Each day is an accomplishment, something worth celebrating, honoring. You have made it this far, take a deep breath and reset.

It sounds ridiculous to say, but I am committed to making more mistakes in the future. Continuing to try new things and doing the work to understand how to improve and dedicating the time to practice. Look at the images from our site so you can see how we are making it easier for you to grow with us. If you want to join us online, you have to set-up a new account in our web portal, we could not sync our old memberships into the new system. https://online.marinpoweryoga.com

Peace and Forgiveness,
Jamie

Launch!

"A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it." John Steinbeck

“A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.” John Steinbeck

As we move thru the weeks of Shelter In Place, time has stretched beyond what we thought was impossible. Remember back when we were going to see what happens in 2 weeks? No, I don’t either. The lessons are happening in real time, we are evolving together.

We are launching our online Membership TODAY. You can click in and sign up from our website, if you join us in the next month you can lock in our introductory price of $30 per month, in June we increase the price to $40. If you have ever been a Member of MPY, I want you to have the choice of joining us online at our lowest rate, we also need and want you to join us again!

What comes with the online Membership? We are starting off with 3 live streams a day, from our homes (see the start of the schedule below, Aracelies is streaming live at 8:30am this morning). Each week we will also be loading up different classes into our new On Demand system, we are building out a library of everything we do, from Power Yoga to Gentle, Yin, TRX, BootCamp, Meditation and Mat Pilates. Yes, we will be adding in kids yoga and fitness classes! No, we can not do Stop Drop and Dance, you can join that thru Grace.

Are our edges still rough? We planned on having 20 classes loaded into the On Demand system by today and things did not go as we planned. Welcome to starting over, changing direction and learning quickly. Yeah, the edges are still rough.

What am I excited about? The quality of the new Live Streams and on Demand videos are amazing. You can share your Membership in your household, meaning you can do Power Yoga while you partner does BootCamp and your kids do Kids Yoga, all on one account. We are still learning how to use all of the features, you will be able to download videos to your device and watch them offline. This is ideal if we ever get to travel again, or if you want to take your device out under the oak or bay tree in your backyard.

Tips? You may have to lower the quality if your device is further away from your router, this is something that varies with the quality of internet and usage in our houses and neighborhoods. Yesterday we crashed Vimeo between us uploading videos and trying to sign in. Welcome to the pandemic, these are the least of our problems even if they are real. Practice patience with us, laugh and cry with imperfections and forgive us knowing we are doing something new.

I hope you will consider joining us online, we are applying everything we have learned in the last 6 weeks to bring you and your family the best of MPY online in an ad free premium experience. I’d like to tell you we have plans for re-opening, I am limited by the same lack of information and evolving science that you are. What I can tell you is we are implementing a strategy to improve your health and sanity during this time. If you have financial hardship, message amy@marinpoweryoga.com and she will figure something out for you. We are all in this together.

Keep your head up, stay healthy and consider joining us again,
Jamie

Volunteering at The Food Bank

Catching up with Marianne Mullen:

For the past month, I have been volunteering with Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster response volunteer organization, who is working to support Food Banks nationwide. We have been helping to package food for distribution, deliver meals to the homebound, coordinate logistics, organize fellow volunteers, and conduct warehouse management. The Food Bank operation I am helping to manage is in Santa Rosa and is a central hub that services other food banks, food pantries, school meals, senior citizen centers and communities covering a territory that extends to the Oregon border.

Due to the current shelter in place and resulting economic situation, millions of people newly struggle to get by without jobs or wages and are suddenly joining the nearly 40 million citizens who were experiencing food insecurity before the pandemic. Many are relying on food banks for the first time in their lives. The particular Food Bank I work with went from creating 300-400 food boxes a day, to now up to 3000 per day. Food Banks across the country are hard pressed to meet this increased need, especially since most of their usual volunteer staff are seniors, who currently cannot volunteer due to health risks.

Even though it’s been labor intensive work, with some very hot, sweaty days for sure, I feel grateful for the opportunity to be of service to the community at such a critical time in our country, and to help to ensure that families in vulnerable communities get the food and supplies they need.

Closing Friday

THIS ISN’T EASY.

People, our mission is to improve the health and happiness of our community. We can not do that and continue to hold public classes. We do not have enough information to tell you that it is safe to be in groups of people. We are halting all public classes indefinitely, to be evaluated on a day by day and week by week scenario, as of Friday March 13th, 2020. I understand it sounds almost comical to say we are closing because of a pandemic on Friday the 13th, this is real.We are going to relaunch our website overnight and it will be a “Membership Based Online Learning System.” We are going to do our best to recreate our community online. Yes, it will be new and different. You will have to sign into your account again and it will not be synchronized with your regular account. I will try and make this as smooth as possible, we are doing the best we can! We are figuring out today and over the next week programming and a balance between live streaming and archived classes you can choose to do at your convenience. We will need your energy and support to make this transition.

As soon as it is safe or we can develop a process to hold public classes, we will re-open the studio to public classes. Until then, laugh with us when our stream doesn’t work, help us to figure out how to do this the right way and take safety pre-cautions that will keep you, your family and your neighbors safe. Look at the picture of Amy’s peach tree at the top of this message, the vibrant color and potential hope of sweet peaches this summer, contrast that with the black and white image of our fitness room, this is where we are.

I will send out messages with real information when I have it. Sign into our website tomorrow and set-up your new account with us. Expect things not to work. We are starting a 7 Day online Journey as of tomorrow, we want you to join us for this and grow with us. Do the classes, meditations and participate. We are going to use all of the digital tools and talents in our community to create a positive and safe experience for you.

If you think we are doing this wrong or have ideas on how we can do this better, please write me and share your thoughts with me. If you think this is all ridiculous, I understand and want you to be right. We need your energy and support to do this. Introverts, you have been preparing for this for decades. Extroverts, are you even on this email list? Seriously people, keep your distance and know that all contact is inappropriate right now. More to follow, Friday.

Peace, Love and 6 feet,
Jamie

Getting Lucky in 2018 Takes Consistent Practice

Are you looking for secrets to success in 2018? Is there a magic pill or change in diet or mantra that will give you everything you want in 2018? Probably not.

The secret to success at Marin Power Yoga is Consistent Practice!!! Look at our classes and the schedule and commit to a consistent practice, whether it is meditation, TRX, TKO, BootCamp, Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga or Yin Yoga. You can do any combination of classes, do them regularly! You will see our teachers work hard to show up regularly to their classes, they do this because their growth is tied to consistency also. When our teachers show up regularly to their classes, they become better teachers. Our teachers are students, their habits for success are what they have learned by experience. We ask our teachers to lead by example, so that you know we are living our truth!

Why do we have so many choices? Because we like to do a lot of different activities. We added TKO (kick boxing) in because we love Cardio! Our TRX and BootCamp classes bring pure Strength, Dance brings Cardio and Joy into our workouts…Yoga is the balance where we find, Strength, Flexibility and Stability! Try all of our classes, design a schedule you can keep to 85% of the time and show up to class…we will take care of the rest!

Our local food scene in Marin has taken a huge step into primetime foodie heaven with amazing choices from Valenti to Pizzalina to Cucina to LaApparte to Ensalata to MadCap to MHBB and appetizing rewards for those who venture to Picco or Gia in Larkspur to El Paseo in Mill Valley. You Can Change

My dad died on FridayNovember 24, 2017, this photo was from 2 weeks ago, when I saw him last. He was suffering immensely from Alzheimer’s and his passing was natural and necessary. My Mom, Carol Foresta was by his side and my sister Molly Gia Foresta and I are in the Bronx sitting Shiva for the Italian raised Catholic Atheist…his sister, my Aunt Diane Materazzi will be joining us Tuesday to honor and remember my dad.

My Dad was a Lefty, to most people that is not a big deal, but as a basketball player with an accurate 3 pointer…he was deadly and earned the nickname “Shot Gun.” This followed him into the Military Police for the Air Force where he earned Sharp Shooter designation and served in Vietnam. War and the secrecy and lies surrounding the areas he fought in destroyed him mentally and emotionally. My dad used AA and therapy extensively to survive and be with us as a family.

When my dad cleaned up, he became a teacher in NYC for 25 years. He started in English and History and evolved
Into following his passion for art and teaching kids art. He spent his last years in retirement painting and taking art classes.

My dad taught me 3 important lessons in life. 1) You Can Do Anything. He stopped drinking alcohol because he wanted to stay in our family, from blacking out drunk to 35 years of sobriety. It wasn’t easy, some days he went to multiple AA meetings because he had to. He wrote plays, acted in the theater, screamed, yelled, fought and struggled with the ideas of freedom and justice.
2) Love. I met my dad when I was 7, he didn’t have to love me, but he did and I knew that. I also knew he was crazy, so who knows. I know that he loved my mom and understood that he could never be as smart as her, but by simply copying her he could be a respectable adult. Love makes you do stuff like that, become a respectable adult.
3) Good Music Is Important. My dad loved Jazz from Miles Davis to Thelonius Monk, he loved Motown and would sing the songs from the street corners of Brooklyn in his teens to our apartment in the Bronx growing up. I don’t know if he was a good singer, but he sang a lot better than my mom (that doesn’t tell you much beyond I got my singing from my Mom). He equally loved Crosby Stills and Nash and would turn up the radio if a Jimi Hendrix song came on. Every revolution needs music to tell the stories of our time and my dad loved the music of the revolution.

My dad was definitely not the easiest person for my Mom to Love, nor was he the best father. There were many loud crazy fights and rash decisions made in anger. When he couldn’t be with us he slept in his room, depressed. The struggle was real and the effects of war and PTSD were a life long battle that effected our family.

The biggest change in my life directly attributed to my Dad, is my Sister. I cried when he told me on the phone that she was born, disappointed I wouldn’t have a brother to play football with. I cried again 2 weeks later when I met her and realized she was a tiny baby (evidently I was not the sharpest tool in the shed as a kid). Having a Sister changed my life in a way only matched by getting married and having my own kids. My sister and I are hybrids, genetically mis-matched and raised differently yet exactly the same, we have been deeply loved by our parents and each other.

My dad loved Brooklyn, my Mom, his Sister, my Sister and I, his Grandkids…Music, Art, The Mets and Pro Basketball. He was crazy, yelled and struggled with anger and chemical imbalance. He loved our neighborhood and once he was with people, loved talking with them honestly. He didn’t have many friends and never called people on the phone nor emailed them, but he really did like the friends he had and would always update me about them.

My dad did yoga way before it was cool and would meditate in our living room early in the morning. He came to Marin Power Yoga for gentle yoga and bodywork and loved it. He tried TRX with me once and the Alzheimer’s had progressed past getting his body to learn new things. My dad loved his community here in The Bronx and equally loved visiting our community in San Anselmo. I said goodbye to my dad a year ago, before his health declined and I am grateful he has moved beyond the pain he was living with.

Freedom To Make Mistakes

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.” Mahtma Gandhi Our yoga studio is a great place for you to make mistakes, for you to be yourself, for you to grow. We all make mistakes, it is how we find our limits and barriers to growth. I always remind myself to balance the big risks with small mistakes. Small mistakes are recoverable. We can take the lesson, evolve and grow with new knowledge.

We have Amazing Teachers! They our Yin, Gentle Yoga, Power Yoga, TRX Classes, BootCamp and TKO (Cardio Kick-Boxing) in San Anselmo, the heart of Marin County. You will find our classes are designed to elevate your strength, spirit and mind. You will get stronger overtime you show up for class! Feel Good, No Feel GREAT! See You In Class!

Why are we open Thanksgiving? It is a GLORIOUS holiday! Between coffee, walks or bike rides, yelling at the football game, cooking, cleaning, eating and time with family and friends. Time With You. Time With Us.  Time With Your Community. Stronger. Healthier. Happier. Everything is Possible!

Whether you have tried us once or come to classes every day, I want you to know that I care about our Town, our Community and most of all our Kids. The future is bright, it will take a lot of hard work and love to create the opportunities we have today for our kids in the future. I believe we can get there together. We Are In This Together!!! We Are Stronger Together!!!

Working Together Sucks

It’s true and we all know it. The hardest most painful projects in school were group projects. It takes all of us working together, collaborating to create positive change. Be part of the solution.

All you have to do is sign into Next Door and you can witness demeaning and insulting conversations between neighbors and bitter insults with no intention of creating solutions. Your voice and actions count. Consider taking the Pledge here: https://elevatethediscussion.org

Back To School

We are going Back To School. We have launched new software to more effectively run Marin Power Yoga. If you already have an account, set your new Password Here. We are embracing the season of change and learning how to find our accounts, classes, sign in for classes. It is just as painful for us as it is for you. There is also something exciting about it. What if we can communicate better? What if we can have a better relationship with each other? What if our Core Values are the Foundation of Everything we do?

We are really excited about offering new classes and special series from TKO Fundamentals with Jordan to Meditation Workshops with Casey to The Pulse with Tiana and TurboKick with Natalie and Full Moon Yin classes with a Live SoundBath from Jamie and Gabe to a Deepen Your Power Leadership Series with Michael! We have 95 classes each week created to improve your health and increase your connection to your self and our community!

We are all capable of learning and we all learn in different ways. Part of our search is based in understanding how we each learn and applying that technique to varied information. This is where our growth is. We learn from each other. One of our Members, Jeff Hopkins, helped us by creating a document on how to update your credit card in your KarmaSoft account.  Another Member, Trish Owen, shared this link for resetting your password. We are stronger because of our talents and combined skills!!! Thank you to all of our Members and Guests growing with us thru this!

As you navigate the season of change whether it is saying goodbye to friends and kids, starting a new grade or school, or starting a new relationship, choose the words with which you speak to yourself kindly. Acknowledge what you are doing and believe in the positive outcomes you want to create. Your Community Is Here. We Believe In You. I have to tell myself this all of the time. I take very seriously the Trust you put in us and I commit to getting better at what we do every single day. We Are In This Life Together.

As Bill said to me the other day, Peace is an action. As is Love. We all must take action, practice what we want to create. I encourage you to start with what you can do. Pick up some trash on the street when you are walking, acknowledge your neighbor and hug people who need to know you love them. We must actively create the world we want to live in. Start Now.

Donating to the ACLU

We have been doing a lot of fundraising this year! Our first official fundraiser of the year was for the ACLU! As a community, we raised over $1,400 for the Northern California Chapter between cash raised, checks mailed in and online donations. If you are motivated to help protect all people, you can donate here: https://www.aclunc.org/donate – THANK YOU!!!

Why are we active in politics and fundraising? It starts with the complex yogic philosophy of Ahimsa, commonly described as Do No Harm. We recognize that if we do not take action to support people, they will be harmed. In other words, by not doing anything you can cause a lot of harm. We are Yogis, we take action to help ourselves and everyone else that we can. Sometimes this shows up as picking up a piece of glass on the sidewalk, other times by helping someone across the street. We are going to do our best to create awareness and “put our money where our mouth is” and raise money to support causes that actively help people and especially women. Be The Change.
