Member of the Week: Michael and Jeanne Lipson

1. What is your full name?

Michael Lipson

Jeanne Lipson

2. What was your favorite activity as a child?

M:  Amusement parks and pinball machines

J:  Jumping on the trampoline, waterskiing and tubing at our summer lake house in Minnesota

3. What job did you have in high school?

M:  Many: Delivery boy & cashier for a pharmacy. Coolest part was getting paid to drive around a Mustang. Drove an ice cream truck 1 summer near the beach. Shoveled snow. Mowed lawns. Even worked flea markets w/my own leather belt & buckle biz.

J:  I worked at a big department store in Fargo, ND, where I grew up.  I worked in accessories — handbags, jewelry, scarves.  I remember demonstrating all the ways you could use a scarf clip to ladies who bought them and who definitely weren’t going to remember how to use them when they got home. (I can’t remember now, either.)

4. What is your most embarrassing memory?

M:  I ordered dancing shrimp in a remote part of Thailand, which is live little shrimp in seasoned lime juice served trapped between 2 plates. They “popcorn” from being in the acid. I didn’t know you wait until they’re dead to consume, so I was eating shrimp spastically flipping all over the place including up my shorts.  The locals were hysterical…

J:  This moment is based on the fact that I grew up in a part of the country that is table-top flat. When driving across the country on my move to CA, I pulled into a gas station in the foothills of the Rocky Mtns because my car (a not-so-powerful Ford Pinto) seemed to be losing power steadily. I explained this to the mechanic, who gave me an incredulous look and said, “Lady, you are going uphill.”

5. What is the best vacation you have ever taken?

M&J:  A 7+ month family trip around the world living out of backpacks when our kids were in 3rd & 6th grades. We traveled through SE Asia, India, Middle East & Africa. Not exactly a “vacation”, but a life-changing experience for all of us.

6. What makes you laugh out loud?

M: Unexpected body sounds

J: Recent example: Belly laughs with our kids (18 and 21!) playing card games over the holidays.

7. What accomplishments are you most proud of?

M: Living life on my own terms. Making my children a priority over work and money. Leaving investment banking cuz it didn’t feed my soul. Growing & evolving w/Jeanne throughout 26 years of marriage. Prioritizing experiences, relationships and health over money, status and power. Finding ways to truly love life and BE ME.

J: Honestly, the phrase “blessed with” resonates more with me than the phrase “proud of”.  Bringing two amazing human beings into the world. Creating a partnership with my husband based on values which became our vows to each other.  Creating a life in this community where I give back and receive so much in return.

8. What advice would you give to your younger self?

M:  Don’t hold back. Failure leads to becoming better.

J:   You’re enough.

9. What would you like people to remember about you?

M: My zest for life. And my caring for others.

J:  That I was kind.

10. Why do you practice at Marin Power Yoga?

M:  To promote body awareness & maintain physical vitality for as long as possible. As an avid bicyclist, yoga is the perfect offset to all those hours in the saddle. And to be part of the community.

J:   Mind, body, spirit.  Yoga has been a part of my life for years, and I’ve been going to MPY since the studio opened. Jamie and Amy — and some exceptional teachers —  have created a welcoming space and a wonderful community, with classes that are convenient, affordable and available to all.
