Member of the Week: Sara Shaw

1. What is your full name?

Sara Gabriela Shaw

2. What was your favorite activity as a child?

I loved writing poetry, rearranging my bedroom and also eating candy. My dad used to tell me I was going to marry a jellybean.

3. What job did you have in high school?

It wasn’t a paid job – but I worked at the local birth center where I grew up in Pittsburgh.

4. What is your most embarrassing memory?

My family was really close with my best friend’s family and we would often eat shabbat meals all together. One Saturday afternoon we were all seated around the table quietly reciting the post-meal prayer. I felt something under the table and thought it was my friend’s dog, Jake, so I reached out to pet him. After a couple seconds I realized I was petting my friend’s dad’s knee. He was giving me the strangest look. The worst part was that I couldn’t explain myself for another minute or so until we all completed saying the prayer. It was so awkward and I’m sure my face was strawberry red. I’m still close with their family and she is still my best friend.

5. What is the best vacation you have ever taken?

I traveled to Guatemala for a month by myself. Best decision I ever made.

6. What makes you laugh out loud?

Friends – the television show.

7. What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I’m so proud that I am a labor and delivery nurse. Ever since high school I knew I wanted to be involved in birth somehow. It took lots of hard work, because the sciences never came easily to me, but I made it happen.

8. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Learn to play a musical instrument and get really good at it. Stick with it even though practicing can be no fun.

9. What would you like people to remember about you?

I want them to remember me as a dependable person who was an excellent cook, a devoted nurse, a decent ukulele player and a great party thrower.

10. Why do you practice at Marin Power Yoga?

I love the structure it gives my week. I try to do a mixture of TRX and bootcamp at least 3 times a week and I feel so good when I walk out of that room dripping sweat.
