We have been doing a lot of fundraising this year! Our first official fundraiser of the year was for the ACLU! As a community, we raised over $1,400 for the Northern California Chapter between cash raised, checks mailed in and online donations. If you are motivated to help protect all people, you can donate here: https://www.aclunc.org/donate – THANK YOU!!!
Why are we active in politics and fundraising? It starts with the complex yogic philosophy of Ahimsa, commonly described as Do No Harm. We recognize that if we do not take action to support people, they will be harmed. In other words, by not doing anything you can cause a lot of harm. We are Yogis, we take action to help ourselves and everyone else that we can. Sometimes this shows up as picking up a piece of glass on the sidewalk, other times by helping someone across the street. We are going to do our best to create awareness and “put our money where our mouth is” and raise money to support causes that actively help people and especially women. Be The Change.
Drumming comes to Marin Power Yoga with Gabe Harris. This 6 week series starts this Thursday from 7:15-8:30pm. The price of each class is $20 cash paid directly to Gabe! We will have drums for purchase, but bring a drum if you have one.
You may know Gabe from his drumming at our Ubuntu Flow on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am! He is AMAZING, learn from the best!
We will have fun learning good technique, rhythmic awareness, and traditional rhythms from West Africa on djembe and doun doun drums. Some drums will be available during class and for purchase.
“People pretend not to like grapes when the vines are too high for them to reach.” ― Marguerite de Navarre
In some senses, Stephen Covey’s quote defines us. This is how we are building Marin Power Yoga. We are constantly re-imagining what will make this place an amazing space to be in. Yes, we draw from the past. Yes, we try and avoid mistakes we have made and do more of what worked. But yes, we are also trying to find something new, something we have always wanted yet never knew how to describe it.
Why forget the past? The successes and failures do not define us. It is not the past that will determine the future, it is simply part of our experience. As you look to the present moment in your life, create your contribution to the world from the depths of your soul. Figure out what you can give and share that with all of us! You are free!!!

Thanksgiving is upon us! In the past, that has never really meant anything to me other than turkey and stuffing. This year I have made the decision to make this holiday all about gratitude. I have made this Thanksgiving a celebration of all things that I am thankful for. As I am writing this, I am thinking well no kidding isn’t that what it has always been about? Perhaps in theory it has but not in reality, for me anyway. Rather, Thanksgiving has been about “having to cook” and “having to eat.”
That said, how amazing it is to sit and really think about all of the things that we have to be grateful for. I am not simply talking about our homes in Marin or our cars or our new Lulus. I am talking about the fragrance of the flowers, the taste of chocolate on our lips, the smile from a stranger, the warmth of a blanket. The list can go on and on if we allow it. If we really allow ourselves to be present to those “stolen moments” as I call them, the world can really be a perfect place. The challenge then is to be present for these moments and not to let them slip by un-noticed. That is where the practice of yoga comes in.
The opportunity for us to slow down and observe all things around us. What a freaking gift! Soon, instead of complaining about the little things we are simply in awe of even smaller things and soon after that we no longer needs lavish gifts and meals to feel grateful. Soon, a perfect day is something as simple as coffee in bed and walking the dog not necessarily margaritas on a beach in Mexico. Soon a perfect yoga practice is not rocking a handstand but simply feeling your breath move your body.
In summary, I implore you to find as many “stolen moments” as you can and relish in them. Smile when you are experiencing them, maybe even give a shout out or do a spin. Pay homage to all that you are grateful for and maybe you will see the stressors, that can be associated with this time of the year, be replaced with the magic of the season.
Sat Nam Yogis and a very Happy Thanksgiving!
“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness – it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”
We have been open for exactly 6 months today and I am lit up with energy. We have taught over 700 amazing yoga classes and slowly but surely our community is growing! Recently our staff did a leadership program led by Teo and Oli from EXLI, we discussed in depth our values and how our values show up in our lives. Underneath the discussion, I found myself thinking about MPY and wondering if our values are showing up in classes, programming and our business.
For the most part, I was blown away to see that the teachers and team making MPY possible are reflecting our group values in everything we do. As I dug deeper, I found myself struggling with the question of when to say no and when to say yes. It is simply to easy to say YES and rarely do I find myself saying NO. The easy obvious answer was simply say NO more often. I resent easy answers, I felt some resistance and sat with the issue for a few days.
What came up for me is that I really need to become conscious of what I am saying YES to. For the last week I have been practicing by evaluating everything that requires a YES or NO. I am not passing judgment, nor am I simply saying NO. Rather I am bringing awareness to my decision making and looking at what the outcome is. I don’t have any real answers here, just questioning and acknowledging the strength that comes from increased awareness.
Every now and then you have to Connect To What Really Matters…YOURSELF. The relationship we develop with ourself is what enables us to connect to others. The sunset is one of those magical times in our day when we see all of life around us shift, reminding us that we can change as well. As we dive deeper into ourselves, we create the change that ripples across the universe. See you on your mat!
You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage—pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.”
― Stephen Covey
We opened 3 months ago in San Anselmo, across the street from Haney Orthodontics and next door to Rock Flower Paper. We are thrilled to be here in town! We have seen our Members getting stronger, increasing flexibility and in general elevating our lives with their presence!!! Make no mistake, we love being here and want to share the joy of practicing yoga with you!
If you have not been in, come check us out! Your first class is on us!!! We want you doing yoga 5-7 times a week, why? Because the more you practice, the happier you will be. It really is that simple. Practice 3 times a week and you will maintain your life as it is now. Practice 5 times a week and you will slowly roll back the clock on your life. You will physically feel better, your brain will give you a break and your joints and muscles will loosen. I can not promise you a fountain of youth, but I can promise you a better quality of life.
There is a lot of “work” done in your daily yoga practice. We practice a very physical form of yoga that will challenge your muscles and create flexibility, at a price. It is going to take commitment and focus. Even faith on those days you don’t want to practice. What is the reward? Happiness, Joy and maybe even LOVE. When we are deep in a twist, wringing sweat and poisons out of our body, we breathe. We find ease in the tight spaces and push ourselves to find a “new edge.” Why? Why do we push, pull, sweat and stretch?
For the love of life. This is the result we find consistently when we practice. A deeper appreciation for the moment, the planet, our lives and each other. When you are in a difficult place, whether it is a yoga pose or a conversation with your best friend, find a way to express the Joy that resides deep in your soul. Let it shine out and spread to everyone you are in contact with. We practice and because we practice we are better. Better than we were yesterday. Keep your head up and smile, you will light up the world!
“A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” Phyllis Diller – Olivia demonstrates the joy of “leaning tree.” Next time you are on your mat, try playing with a few poses. Explore the world you are creating!
One of my favorite poses is Half Moon Pose or Ardha Chandrasana. During Marina’s class this morning, I noticed Teo and Tim using blocks (see the picture below) in half moon. There is something really funny about calling them blocks as really like Ganesha, they remove obstacles in your practice. We have been talking about how Ganesha can place obstacles in your path when you need them and remove them when you are ready to move forward.
In this case the blocks are bringing the ground closer, creating a point of connection. This enables the body to expand up from the ground, opening and clearing space in the chest and shoulders. The blocks are your Ganesha! Next time you move into Half Moon Pose, grab a block and laugh to yourself – knowing you are really removing a block in your body and in your life!
Day 2, 9am class. Friends from Cleveland who live in San Francisco, Neighbors, Friends, Family and you. Every yoga pose starts with a strong foundation. We build from the bottom of our feet, rooted to the ground. Elevate thru every part of our body and light up the world with the energy coming out of every inch of our body. This week we are rooting deep, nurturing our foundation and finding space for something new in San Anselmo!
We have been practicing for a week now, making adjustments to the sound, temperature, finishing touches in the bathroom and at times the list seems endless of what is left to be done. These are like gentle adjustments, easing us into a more comfortable space.
Power Yoga Marin is located at 135 Tunstead in San Anselmo California. We are getting ready to open and getting the question, what type of yoga are you going to do?And, what does Power Yoga mean? The real anser is we are going to be doing Vinyasa Flow, yoga connected to the breath. Rhythmic. Physical. Connected. Our goal is to create JOY. We practice because we love it.
This is your life, live it fully.
