SugarFoot is Ready For The Holidays

SugarFoot is ready for the Holidays in San Anselmo, Are You? Cruising thru town, the shops are open and San Anselmo is a living representation of small town America. From holiday cheer to creative presents…you will see workshops and clothing at Neve & Hawk to women’s clothing at SideKicks and TumbleWeed and Kismet to something race at Chadwicks and men’s gifts at Utility Goods or little stocking stuffers at Fig Garden and Jewels at Embellish and treats for the dogs at Dogville.

It is so tempting to embed yourself on your couch with a glass of wine and a cozy fire…save that for the 24th! The restaurants are open and filled with energy! Our local food scene in Marin has taken a huge step into primetime foodie heaven with amazing choices from Valenti to Pizzalina to Cucina to LaApparte to Ensalata to MadCap to MHBB and appetizing rewards for those who venture to Picco or Gia in Larkspur to El Paseo in Mill Valley. Even the more normal fair of Taco Janes or Creekside will bring you warm smiles and cold drinks!

We love being in San Anselmo and our retail shop is a great place to ask questions about Yoga, TRX, TKO, BootCamp or find a new pair of Leggings or Yoga Pants! We have t-shirts for littles and “yoga joes” to tanks and yoga mats for adults. More importantly, we have a space for you to be you. Stop in and say hello on your adventures around town…wave hello to your neighbor and sing a happy holidaze to all you see!

The first part of each session will help you get quiet, notice what’s going on deep down and get more in touch with your challenges, yearnings and reality. The latter part of each evening will be dedicated to identifying and practicing tools and methods to help each person make positive shifts off the mat. Meditation, journaling, small group exercises, larger group work and more will be incorporated.

Michael Lipson, an experienced executive coach and personal growth practitioner, will facilitate in an open style for participants to co-create how the group evolves. Singles and couples, younger or older, are all welcome. New App is Coming

Our new Mobile App has been submitted to Apple and we are waiting for approval! It has been a week and one more week is normal. Yes, accessing our new software from a website is a pain, from a different perspective it is amazing that you can see a schedule online, have updates to the minute and see a teacher’s bio and when they are teaching!

I keep thinking about how when we first did a Mobile app it seemed crazy and it took us what felt like forever to get people to download the app. 4 years later, the Mobile device is what most of us use for everything!!! This is a great time for me to practice patience, kindness and perseverance…while checking the app store twice a day to see if we have been approved!!!

95 classes a week, a spectacular TKO program and wide variety of yoga classes from Yin to Gentle to Power…Make your week amazing with us!

Working Together Sucks

It’s true and we all know it. The hardest most painful projects in school were group projects. It takes all of us working together, collaborating to create positive change. Be part of the solution.

All you have to do is sign into Next Door and you can witness demeaning and insulting conversations between neighbors and bitter insults with no intention of creating solutions. Your voice and actions count. Consider taking the Pledge here: https://elevatethediscussion.org

Turning 4 – Our Birthday!

This Saturday, May 13, 2017 – We are celebrating our Birthday!!! From 7-10pm we are having a Dance Party with a DJ at the Log Cabin. Tickets are $20 and there is a cash bar downstairs! We are going to raise our glasses (probably plastic cups) up high, shake our butts low and move our feet!!! See your friends, neighbors and family, be prepared to have a GREAT time! contact amy@marinpoweryoga.com to reserve your ticket, half the tickets are already taken and you can not buy tickets at the door.

Remember Where You Came From

Looking back, we have come a long way! It took 6 months just to get our  lease, the landlord was ok with yogis, but not so thrilled with the idea of hot yoga. We negotiated and talked and came to an agreement that achieved both or our goals, we installed a floor and painted and opened a few weeks after signing. We started with 25 power yoga classes on the schedule, 5 of them 6am classes!!! 4 years later we have 95 classes a week! Yes, we have 40 Power Yoga Classes and added to the mix are Gentle Yoga, Yin, Meditation, Stop Drop and Dance, TRX, TKO (Kick Boxing) and we are testing Turbo Kick and Zumba!!!

How else have we grown in the last 4 years? We have teachers who have babies, Members have fallen out of love and found love, we have fought cancer and strokes, raised thousands of dollars for our local schools and national non-profits and the Africa Yoga Project, created a Yoga alliance certified Teacher Training Program for 200 hr and 300 hr. yoga teachers. We launched a Power Cycle program and killed the program. Our failures have been just as real as our successes!

What are we working on now? We are launching the Marin Yoga Foundation this month! The purpose of this Foundation is to provide Yoga, Meditation, Fitness, Leadership and Training to underserved women and children in Marin County. We want to extend the benefits of what we experience to our greater community, to people who can’t financially afford luxuries such as pre-emptive healthcare and who are willing to do the work. In some ways this is the biggest thing we have ever done. In other ways, this is all we do.

What is it like to be finally entering kindergarten? We still make mistakes, we rarely draw in between the lines, we are just as likely to fall down as we are to hit a home run and we have so much to learn. We have to face our fears, real and imaginary, every time we start something new. We have to get up every time we are knocked down. We have faith there is light at the end of the tunnel, especially when it seems impossibly dim. We believe in the power of Kindness, Compassion and LOVE.

As we finish our 4th year, I am so grateful to our team of teachers and support staff who keep Marin Power Yoga evolving, our Members who witness us change in real time, all of the guest teachers who have taken time out of their lives to share their knowledge and experience with us, our amazing Town of San Anselmo (from fellow residents to the local government) and most of all to the Littles – the kids who remind us of the importance of improving our Health and of living a life of Service and Joy.

We Are Stronger Together!!!

Tuning In To Music

Music is the culture of Revolution. It gives voice to the masses, it communicates what is in our hearts. The subject of music is widely discussed in yoga studios. Should we only play Indian music honoring the past (did they even play music in their yoga classes 4,000 years ago), should we avoid music and observe noble silence, does music interfere with our thoughts, does the music guide us on our journey, is the music obscure enough, too much pop, too loud, too quiet?

I love music. In some senses, I hear music everywhere I go. The whirling rhythm of bike wheels spinning, the back beat of car doors slamming, the wailing of a child cutting across the soundscape like a Gibson Hollow Body Guitar. When I lay my head on my pillow and the silence becomes overwhelming, I hear songs playing. No voices telling me to do things, just music guiding the rhythm of my life.

When looking at sound options for Marin Power Yoga, I listened to a variety of speakers and talked with experts. I knew we needed the voice to be clear and crisp, with throbbing bass underneath. I knew we needed to be energized by the depth of the kick drum and motivated by the crack of the snare. Our souls vibrate at their own frequency, guiding our bodies and freeing our minds. It is our choice to hear the music, to listen carefully, to understand the deeper meaning.

Somewhere along the line, yoga teachers became DJs. We monitor and control all aspects of the ambiance in the room, from the lights to the heat to the music being played. It is your choice to let go of control and dive into the experience, or to see the lights as too bright or too dim and the music as too loud or inappropriate. Whether you find Bob Marley in Savasana offensive or the pulsating bass of Michael Franti annoying, you always have the option to let go and allow the music to move you.

There is a time for silence and it has it’s place in every class. As you listen carefully you will find the silence deafening, whether it is your pulsating heartbeat blowing your ear drums out or the sound of a fire truck passing thru town or a little Huey Lewis reminding us it’s hip to be square. Stop fighting the music and start moving with the rhythm of life the envelopes your soul.

Below is a link to one of my favorite playlists of Michael Franti & Spearhead Songs. Best if played LOUD.

Donating to the ACLU

We have been doing a lot of fundraising this year! Our first official fundraiser of the year was for the ACLU! As a community, we raised over $1,400 for the Northern California Chapter between cash raised, checks mailed in and online donations. If you are motivated to help protect all people, you can donate here: https://www.aclunc.org/donate – THANK YOU!!!

Why are we active in politics and fundraising? It starts with the complex yogic philosophy of Ahimsa, commonly described as Do No Harm. We recognize that if we do not take action to support people, they will be harmed. In other words, by not doing anything you can cause a lot of harm. We are Yogis, we take action to help ourselves and everyone else that we can. Sometimes this shows up as picking up a piece of glass on the sidewalk, other times by helping someone across the street. We are going to do our best to create awareness and “put our money where our mouth is” and raise money to support causes that actively help people and especially women. Be The Change.

Nothing To Lose

A person with nothing to lose is dangerous. My gut check is usually, “what is the risk?” Essentially I am asking myself, “can I afford to lose this?” This is a question we should ask ourselves every time we loan our bike or car to a friend. Forget the car, can you afford to lose the friend? Will you still like them when they don’t fix the car they broke the way you would have? Can you afford to not have your car?

In some senses, this is why the government loans us money to get an education or buy a house, it is in society’s interest for you to have something so valuable you will not want to lose it. This shows up in our relationships with each other. We fear losing the relationship so we hold back, not knowing the other person wants us in all of our glory.

What do we have to lose? Trust. When I look at our community I appreciate how much you trust us. When I look at my personal relationships, I see they are all founded upon trust. Especially when I look to my kids Alex and Olivia, I see how much we are trying to create an understanding of trust. We are discussing a fragile relationship, a thin line that we walk on.

When the trust is lost, we have nothing to lose and we become free. We often call this trust, integrity. Our word is backed up by our actions. How we hold ourselves accountable, is what becomes our integrity. It is our professional standard. It is yoga. It is the union between our mind, body and relationships. As we sail thru this world, trust in your relationships and maintain your integrity when it is challenged. I am conscious that my most valuable asset is trust. As we make changes around here, hold us to that standard. Look around at your own life both personal and professional, if the trust is not there, you have nothing to lose…you are free.

“Now that she had nothing to lose, she was free.” Paulo Coelho

Live Out Of Your Imagination

Stephen Covey Quote I,agination

In some senses, Stephen Covey’s quote defines us. This is how we are building Marin Power Yoga. We are constantly re-imagining what will make this place an amazing space to be in. Yes, we draw from the past. Yes, we try and avoid mistakes we have made and do more of what worked. But yes, we are also trying to find something new, something we have always wanted yet never knew how to describe it.

Why forget the past? The successes and failures do not define us. It is not the past that will determine the future, it is simply part of our experience. As you look to the present moment in your life, create your contribution to the world from the depths of your soul. Figure out what you can give and share that with all of us! You are free!!!

“Live out of your imagination, not your history.” Stephen Covey

Thanksgiving is Upon Us

Gratitude Brene Brown

Thanksgiving is upon us! In the past, that has never really meant anything to me other than turkey and stuffing. This year I have made the decision to make this holiday all about gratitude. I have made this Thanksgiving a celebration of all things that I am thankful for. As I am writing this, I am thinking well no kidding isn’t that what it has always been about? Perhaps in theory it has but not in reality, for me anyway. Rather, Thanksgiving has been about “having to cook” and “having to eat.”

That said, how amazing it is to sit and really think about all of the things that we have to be grateful for. I am not simply talking about our homes in Marin or our cars or our new Lulus. I am talking about the fragrance of the flowers, the taste of chocolate on our lips, the smile from a stranger, the warmth of a blanket. The list can go on and on if we allow it. If we really allow ourselves to be present to those “stolen moments” as I call them, the world can really be a perfect place. The challenge then is to be present for these moments and not to let them slip by un-noticed. That is where the practice of yoga comes in.

The opportunity for us to slow down and observe all things around us. What a freaking gift! Soon, instead of complaining about the little things we are simply in awe of even smaller things and soon after that we no longer needs lavish gifts and meals to feel grateful. Soon, a perfect day is something as simple as coffee in bed and walking the dog not necessarily margaritas on a beach in Mexico. Soon a perfect yoga practice is not rocking a handstand but simply feeling your breath move your body.

In summary, I implore you to find as many “stolen moments” as you can and relish in them. Smile when you are experiencing them, maybe even give a shout out or do a spin. Pay homage to all that you are grateful for and maybe you will see the stressors, that can be associated with this time of the year, be replaced with the magic of the season.

Sat Nam Yogis and a very Happy Thanksgiving!

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness – it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”
-Brene Brown

Connecting To What Matters

We have been open for exactly 6 months today and I am lit up with energy. We have taught over 700 amazing yoga classes and slowly but surely our community is growing! Recently our staff did a leadership program led by Teo and Oli from EXLI, we discussed in depth our values and how our values show up in our lives. Underneath the discussion, I found myself thinking about MPY and wondering if our values are showing up in classes, programming and our business.

For the most part, I was blown away to see that the teachers and team making MPY possible are reflecting our group values in everything we do. As I dug deeper, I found myself struggling with the question of when to say no and when to say yes. It is simply to easy to say YES and rarely do I find myself saying NO. The easy obvious answer was simply say NO more often. I resent easy answers, I felt some resistance and sat with the issue for a few days.

What came up for me is that I really need to become conscious of what I am saying YES to. For the last week I have been practicing by evaluating everything that requires a YES or NO. I am not passing judgment, nor am I simply saying NO. Rather I am bringing awareness to my decision making and looking at what the outcome is. I don’t have any real answers here, just questioning and acknowledging the strength that comes from increased awareness.

Every now and then you have to Connect To What Really Matters…YOURSELF. The relationship we develop with ourself is what enables us to connect to others. The sunset is one of those magical times in our day when we see all of life around us shift, reminding us that we can change as well. As we dive deeper into ourselves, we create the change that ripples across the universe. See you on your mat!

West Coast Stephen Covey Quote

You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage—pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.”
― Stephen Covey

Thrilled To Be Practicing Yoga In San Anselmo – Celebrating 3 Months

We opened 3 months ago in San Anselmo, across the street from Haney Orthodontics and next door to Rock Flower Paper. We are thrilled to be here in town! We have seen our Members getting stronger, increasing flexibility and in general elevating our lives with their presence!!! Make no mistake, we love being here and want to share the joy of practicing yoga with you!

If you have not been in, come check us out! Your first class is on us!!! We want you doing yoga 5-7 times a week, why? Because the more you practice, the happier you will be. It really is that simple. Practice 3 times a week and you will maintain your life as it is now. Practice 5 times a week and you will slowly roll back the clock on your life. You will physically feel better, your brain will give you a break and your joints and muscles will loosen. I can not promise you a fountain of youth, but I can promise you a better quality of life.

Hello How are you? Great Thank You and You?

“Hello, How are you?” This common place greeting is often ignored or simply smiled at. As if the question has an implied answer of, “Great and you?” When you greet people or are greeted this way, are you listening for a response? Do you even want a response? Do you give a real response or an automatic reply?

How we greet people and even simply walk down the street is an indicator of where we are in our lives. Are you keeping your head up and connecting with people? Are you open to seeing people and acknowledging their existence? Some days, we get out on the trails and hike or bike by ourselves, other days we go with a friend and catch up, clear thru what is going on in our lives.

Part of what I love about Marin and San Anselmo specifically is the possibility of connection I see every where I go. We live, work and play in a friendly community where people gather regularly and where you will see your neighbors and friends in the local restaurants such as Comforts or Cucina or a coffee shop like Marin Roasters or out for a drink at Marinitas, Lincoln Park, La Loggia or even Pizzalina. Do you duck your head and pretend you are not there? No, we keep our heads up, make eye contact and acknowledge people. We create the neighborhood and energy around us every where we go.

Whether you are in your car, on your bike or simply walking – make this week an experiment. Smile at people, say hello and be the positive force you want to experience. If you see me, stop and tell me how you are doing!
