Are you looking for secrets to success in 2018? Is there a magic pill or change in diet or mantra that will give you everything you want in 2018? Probably not.
The secret to success at Marin Power Yoga is Consistent Practice!!! Look at our classes and the schedule and commit to a consistent practice, whether it is meditation, TRX, TKO, BootCamp, Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga or Yin Yoga. You can do any combination of classes, do them regularly! You will see our teachers work hard to show up regularly to their classes, they do this because their growth is tied to consistency also. When our teachers show up regularly to their classes, they become better teachers. Our teachers are students, their habits for success are what they have learned by experience. We ask our teachers to lead by example, so that you know we are living our truth!
Why do we have so many choices? Because we like to do a lot of different activities. We added TKO (kick boxing) in because we love Cardio! Our TRX and BootCamp classes bring pure Strength, Dance brings Cardio and Joy into our workouts…Yoga is the balance where we find, Strength, Flexibility and Stability! Try all of our classes, design a schedule you can keep to 85% of the time and show up to class…we will take care of the rest!
The only constant in life is change. Whether we feel it’s good or bad, it’s all in how we perceive it.
Change can be liberating. It can lift baggage and weight from our shoulders. The freedom that can come from change is invigorating. It’s euphoric. Creating space for new pathways for us to journey down. New adventures are always fun!
However, change can be scary. It can alter our emotions, cause rifts in our thinking and create painful marks on our hearts. Anxiety gets heightened, panic goes up and if we don’t get a hold on it, it can turn into depression. Being able to recognize what is happening in the body and the mind during change can be the difference between a long internal battle, or a short struggle.
How I have overcome my anxieties and depression (which can be a roller coaster) has been through the practice of yoga. Specifically through the moving meditation (asanas) and the breath work (pranayama). Every movement is a reminder to breathe deep. To reconnect with myself. To notice what is happening inside of me and to be ok with it. Creating change and space in the body to allow the journey to unfold. When I practice yoga I will sometimes “hit” a break-through; a pose, a deeper engaged breath or even a new thought. This is the change I seek. A new path has unfolded for me.
So if you struggle from anxiety, depression or any obstacles, know you are not alone. Step onto your mat, take a deep breath, envision the path before you and embrace the change.

Debi was first introduced to yoga in 1986 while attending school 1 mile down the road from the Kripalu Yoga Center. Debi enjoyed yoga and continued to practice, but it was not until after completing her Masters degree in Clinical Social Work and working as a psychotherapist that she realized the transformational power of yoga. It was always Debi’s dream to find a way to combine the powerful aspects of the physical practice with the insight and process work of psychotherapy. In 2008, Debi attended her first training with Baron Baptiste and realized that she had found what she was looking for- a powerful asana practice, with authentic sharing, and a global community that is committed to empowerment and service.
As a teacher, Debi has the knowledge and tools to deliver a thoughtful, dynamic asana practice and the insight and intuition to speak to your heart. Debi has an in-depth understanding of yoga and body mechanics that allows her to move seamlessly from teaching a power vinyasa class to a deeply meditative restorative practice, incorporating alignment, therapeutics and personal growth. Debi shares of herself courageously, inspiring others to connect to their spirit, and generate possibility.
Debi Grilo is an E-RYT 500, Certified Baptiste Yoga Instructor, and the Director of Teacher Development at Bala Vinyasa Yoga. She began teaching in 1997 and facilitates the BVY 200 and 500 hour Teacher Trainings. Debi credits Baron Baptiste, Rodney Yee, Tias Little, Aadil Pakhivala and David Swenson for inspiring her practice and teaching. Debi is a mentor for The Africa Yoga Project, is on the Certification Panel for the Baptiste Power Yoga Institute, and a lululemon Ambassador. Debi also works as a consultant in team building, communication, and empowerment.
“Mindfulness”, “Emotional Intelligence” and “Social Intelligence” are terms that have gained recent widespread popularity. Companies like Google, Cisco, and American Express are pouring lots of time and money into programs designed to help employees gain these vital leadership skills.
EXLI.org founders and leadership trainers Teo Nissen, MD and Oli Mittermaier will provide hands on insight into how these programs work and why they are so effective at creating happy and empowered employees (i.e. people!). In this 2-hour workshop, participants will:
– Explore their core personal values
– Identify “blockers” that knock them out of alignment with their values
– Cultivate strategies that build resilience and greater empowerment to overcome blockers
Come prepared to interact, explore and learn how to make values a central part of living a wholehearted and engaged life at work and home.
This workshop is from 9:30-11:30am on Saturday February 1st at Marin Power Yoga. It is complimentary for Members and a regular drop-in of $20 for guests. There will be kids yoga club for ages 3-7 in the tree house at the same time! Where comfortable clothes and bring an open mind to the discussion!!!
“Successful leaders are not only aware of their values but are consistently able to act in alignment with them.”
“Everything in the Universe is within you. Ask all from yourself.” Rumi – This is a simple statement that plays out in our lives regularly. It comes in the form of the word “no” and negative phrasing. “I can’t do a headstand.” “I am overwhelmed with work and can’t do that.” “I do not have time to practice 5 x a week.”
What if you already know everything? What if you really can do anything you set your heart to? What if we define failure as not trying? How we define success is often the most important step in any project we take on. It is the way we evaluate and how we know when we are “done.” What I am really proposing, is that we define success as the level of commitment we make. Did I commit my energy fully to that or did I attempt to do that with one foot on land safe and dry?
Your commitment to your family, job, life, yoga practice and community is what creates success. It starts with you, today – now. Ask more of yourself than anybody else…then shine with all of the knowledge and experience within and share your talents with the world!
Take Me To A Higher Ground! – Meditation Workshop this Sunday August 11th from 9:30 to 11am (yes, the flyer says 11:30 but it will end at 11). You will obtain simple and effective techniques to support a daily meditation practice and participate in a guided meditation with Laura. If you are in our 30 day yoga challenge, this definitely counts as your yoga practice for the day!!! Bring an open mind and leave feeling relaxed and renewed.
Marin Power Yoga is located at 135 Tunstead Avenue, across from the library in San Anselmo. This workshop is complimentary with your membership!!!
Finding play in your yoga practice can be lost amongst the sweating, straining over achieving to get that handstand or even survive that Warrior 1. Yet, this may be what elevates your yoga practice to the next level. Relaxing and finding ease in the pose can come from finding humor and play in the moment. As you lift, reach, express, sink lower…ask yourself, “how can I find lightness in this moment?”
There is no right way to live, just like there is no right way to practice. You show up as you are and the yoga will do you. It will infect your soul with joy and bring happiness into all aspects of your life. Just show up.

We are all constantly in a state of change, evolving beyond the limitations of our imagination. The Hydrangea is an amazing plant with huge blossoms that are made by a bunch of little flowers blooming at the same time. When we practice yoga together, we become like the hydrangea. We sync up and our ability to change becomes a group effort as we bloom together. Our individual efforts are magnified as the power of numbers creates something new.
Like the Hydrangea below that I spotted in Larkspur, we must work together to enable us to become something uniquely beautiful. We practice yoga daily, nourishing the body as we strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and expand our minds. This is the “diet” that empowers us to bloom. You have planted seeds, watered and fertilized – now is the time to blossom.

“Yoga is 99% Practice & 1% theory.” Sri K. Pattabhi Jois – What does this mean to you? When you are practicing do you feel like you are struggling? That you could be thinner, more flexible, stronger and better looking? What if you just practiced? Get out of your head for an hour and do the work. Do the work 5 days a week, as if taking care of your mind, body and soul is a full time job. The results will speak for themselves. If you don’t look and feel better within a few weeks, come in and talk to us about it. After all, yoga is 1% theory.

“You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.” Toni Morrison. These words resonate strongly with me. We all have wings and were born to fly, it doesn’t always seem like that is possible. At times it is a struggle even to get out of bed. This is the shit that weighs us down. The stuff that keeps your head down, looking at the floor as you walk the streets. How do we shift this?
It starts and ends with us. Make a goal each day and achieve it. It can be as small as enjoying the sensation of cold water cleansing our skin as you wash your face in the morning. It can be looking at people as you walk for your morning coffee and smiling or even saying hello. BE THAT CRAZY PERSON, who says hello to strangers and smiles. You will find that most people want to smile back, you will also begin to see the tethers that hold you down begin to loosen. When you are ready to fly, your practice will set you free.
There is a lot of “work” done in your daily yoga practice. We practice a very physical form of yoga that will challenge your muscles and create flexibility, at a price. It is going to take commitment and focus. Even faith on those days you don’t want to practice. What is the reward? Happiness, Joy and maybe even LOVE. When we are deep in a twist, wringing sweat and poisons out of our body, we breathe. We find ease in the tight spaces and push ourselves to find a “new edge.” Why? Why do we push, pull, sweat and stretch?
For the love of life. This is the result we find consistently when we practice. A deeper appreciation for the moment, the planet, our lives and each other. When you are in a difficult place, whether it is a yoga pose or a conversation with your best friend, find a way to express the Joy that resides deep in your soul. Let it shine out and spread to everyone you are in contact with. We practice and because we practice we are better. Better than we were yesterday. Keep your head up and smile, you will light up the world!
“A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” Phyllis Diller – Olivia demonstrates the joy of “leaning tree.” Next time you are on your mat, try playing with a few poses. Explore the world you are creating!
“What you seek is seeking you.” Rumi
Whether it is a companion to share life with or six-pack abs or a moment of peace within the craziness of life, the energy and experiences you seek are right in front of you. The actions you take each day are reflected in your life. Take note of what is happening, what you are experiencing and what you are thinking about. Let the bad go and create space for the good. Sometimes we do this by detoxing in twists, sometimes we want inversions and sometimes we just need to meditate. Be open to what you are seeking, keep your head up and your eyes wide; your actions are creating reality.
