SugarFoot is Ready For The Holidays

SugarFoot is ready for the Holidays in San Anselmo, Are You? Cruising thru town, the shops are open and San Anselmo is a living representation of small town America. From holiday cheer to creative presents…you will see workshops and clothing at Neve & Hawk to women’s clothing at SideKicks and TumbleWeed and Kismet to something race at Chadwicks and men’s gifts at Utility Goods or little stocking stuffers at Fig Garden and Jewels at Embellish and treats for the dogs at Dogville.

It is so tempting to embed yourself on your couch with a glass of wine and a cozy fire…save that for the 24th! The restaurants are open and filled with energy! Our local food scene in Marin has taken a huge step into primetime foodie heaven with amazing choices from Valenti to Pizzalina to Cucina to LaApparte to Ensalata to MadCap to MHBB and appetizing rewards for those who venture to Picco or Gia in Larkspur to El Paseo in Mill Valley. Even the more normal fair of Taco Janes or Creekside will bring you warm smiles and cold drinks!

We love being in San Anselmo and our retail shop is a great place to ask questions about Yoga, TRX, TKO, BootCamp or find a new pair of Leggings or Yoga Pants! We have t-shirts for littles and “yoga joes” to tanks and yoga mats for adults. More importantly, we have a space for you to be you. Stop in and say hello on your adventures around town…wave hello to your neighbor and sing a happy holidaze to all you see!

Your Vote Counts

Election Day is this Tuesday!!! Your Vote Counts!!!

If you are debating who to vote for in San Anselmo, consider Brian Colbert! He is committed to our town and puts the time in to researching issues and listening to what our local citizens think and want. He does not have an agenda. Brian has solid decision making skills, intelligence and an open mind. Most importantly, he is kind and he cares!!! VOTE!!!

Whether you have tried us once or come to classes every day, I want you to know that I care about our Town, our Community and most of all our Kids. The future is bright, it will take a lot of hard work and love to create the opportunities we have today for our kids in the future. I believe we can get there together. Your voice is important and it starts with voting!
Keep Your Head Up and Your Heart Open.

Eat Out San Anselmo

Eating out will benefit your local community and raise funds for relief in Sonoma! Whether you support your favorite restaurant or try a new restaurant, you will see people you know and eat great local food!

Working Together Sucks

It’s true and we all know it. The hardest most painful projects in school were group projects. It takes all of us working together, collaborating to create positive change. Be part of the solution.

All you have to do is sign into Next Door and you can witness demeaning and insulting conversations between neighbors and bitter insults with no intention of creating solutions. Your voice and actions count. Consider taking the Pledge here: https://elevatethediscussion.org

Your Summer Vacation

This your Summer Vacation. It doesn’t matter whether you are working or not. You get this Summer. This chance to take the hike, explore a new beach, visit Healdsburg or Yountville or Sonoma or Napa, go out to dinner in San Francisco or simply take the Ferry to the City as a “treat.”

Everything slows down in Summer…except for the fun! Whether you bike up Mt. Tam, Hike to Cascade Falls or to the top of Mt. Baldy, run the Dipsea or try a new Yoga class or TRX or BootCamp. You get this Summer. This chance to find some more freedom, to re-invent yourself and to live a little bit better.

What is the secret? Nike told us years ago…Just Do It. Make the Plans, Break the Plans, Create the Plans! The only thing in the way is you!!! Give your self space to experience something new. You’ve got this summer!!!

Turning 4 – Our Birthday!

This Saturday, May 13, 2017 – We are celebrating our Birthday!!! From 7-10pm we are having a Dance Party with a DJ at the Log Cabin. Tickets are $20 and there is a cash bar downstairs! We are going to raise our glasses (probably plastic cups) up high, shake our butts low and move our feet!!! See your friends, neighbors and family, be prepared to have a GREAT time! contact amy@marinpoweryoga.com to reserve your ticket, half the tickets are already taken and you can not buy tickets at the door.

Remember Where You Came From

Looking back, we have come a long way! It took 6 months just to get our  lease, the landlord was ok with yogis, but not so thrilled with the idea of hot yoga. We negotiated and talked and came to an agreement that achieved both or our goals, we installed a floor and painted and opened a few weeks after signing. We started with 25 power yoga classes on the schedule, 5 of them 6am classes!!! 4 years later we have 95 classes a week! Yes, we have 40 Power Yoga Classes and added to the mix are Gentle Yoga, Yin, Meditation, Stop Drop and Dance, TRX, TKO (Kick Boxing) and we are testing Turbo Kick and Zumba!!!

How else have we grown in the last 4 years? We have teachers who have babies, Members have fallen out of love and found love, we have fought cancer and strokes, raised thousands of dollars for our local schools and national non-profits and the Africa Yoga Project, created a Yoga alliance certified Teacher Training Program for 200 hr and 300 hr. yoga teachers. We launched a Power Cycle program and killed the program. Our failures have been just as real as our successes!

What are we working on now? We are launching the Marin Yoga Foundation this month! The purpose of this Foundation is to provide Yoga, Meditation, Fitness, Leadership and Training to underserved women and children in Marin County. We want to extend the benefits of what we experience to our greater community, to people who can’t financially afford luxuries such as pre-emptive healthcare and who are willing to do the work. In some ways this is the biggest thing we have ever done. In other ways, this is all we do.

What is it like to be finally entering kindergarten? We still make mistakes, we rarely draw in between the lines, we are just as likely to fall down as we are to hit a home run and we have so much to learn. We have to face our fears, real and imaginary, every time we start something new. We have to get up every time we are knocked down. We have faith there is light at the end of the tunnel, especially when it seems impossibly dim. We believe in the power of Kindness, Compassion and LOVE.

As we finish our 4th year, I am so grateful to our team of teachers and support staff who keep Marin Power Yoga evolving, our Members who witness us change in real time, all of the guest teachers who have taken time out of their lives to share their knowledge and experience with us, our amazing Town of San Anselmo (from fellow residents to the local government) and most of all to the Littles – the kids who remind us of the importance of improving our Health and of living a life of Service and Joy.

We Are Stronger Together!!!

Meditation Coming To Marin Power Yoga – September 22nd!

“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” John Muir

We are launching our first Meditation and Mindfulness program at Marin Power Yoga! Monday September 22, 2014! 7:15 pm at MPY!

Teo and Oli led our “Values” program in the Fall and they are back to launch our Dharma Talks and Group Meditation! To find out more about this dynamic duo check out http://exli.org – they are incredible!

Why now? Because autumn is a time of change. It takes a lot of hard work to change your body. It takes a lot of letting go to expand your mind. Yes, you can read books and sit on your floor and meditate at home. Yes, you should! But you should also connect with a group of people, SHARE a thought, get tips for meditating and PRACTICE.  I am always reminded of how strong we are together. What we accomplish as a group, is possible for everyone…Let’s Do This!

This is included with your membership or a regular Drop-In.

Time You Enjoy Wasting Is Not Wasted Time

The focus on productivity and profitability is paramount in corporate culture in America. The emphasis on a high hourly wage combines with this to distort the value of our time. How we “spend” our time is important. Having a hobby is a lost art form. Wasting Time is not celebrated in a society that is lost in a rat race.

How do we break the cycle? How do we claim our families and save our souls? Sometimes we have to waste a little time. We have to dive into our passions and enjoy how we invest our time…whether that is watching the waves roll in or feeling the cool mountain breeze. Let your body and mind relax, you will perform at your highest potential. Some days, I need to sit on a rock and enjoy the view, some days a hike or ride and others days I need to get on my mat and do the work. Wring my body out, work thru physical pains and mental blocks. Every time I get on my mat, I have a chance to begin again. You have that chance every single day.Time Wasted

Bio
Debi was first introduced to yoga in 1986 while attending school 1 mile down the road from the Kripalu Yoga Center. Debi enjoyed yoga and continued to practice, but it was not until after completing her Masters degree in Clinical Social Work and working as a psychotherapist that she realized the transformational power of yoga. It was always Debi’s dream to find a way to combine the powerful aspects of the physical practice with the insight and process work of psychotherapy. In 2008, Debi attended her first training with Baron Baptiste and realized that she had found what she was looking for- a powerful asana practice, with authentic sharing, and a global community that is committed to empowerment and service.
As a teacher, Debi has the knowledge and tools to deliver a thoughtful, dynamic asana practice and the insight and intuition to speak to your heart. Debi has an in-depth understanding of yoga and body mechanics that allows her to move seamlessly from teaching a power vinyasa class to a deeply meditative restorative practice, incorporating alignment, therapeutics and personal growth. Debi shares of herself courageously, inspiring others to connect to their spirit, and generate possibility.
Debi Grilo is an E-RYT 500, Certified Baptiste Yoga Instructor, and the Director of Teacher Development at Bala Vinyasa Yoga. She began teaching in 1997 and facilitates the BVY 200 and 500 hour Teacher Trainings. Debi credits Baron Baptiste, Rodney Yee, Tias Little, Aadil Pakhivala and David Swenson for inspiring her practice and teaching. Debi is a mentor for The Africa Yoga Project, is on the Certification Panel for the Baptiste Power Yoga Institute,  and a lululemon Ambassador. Debi also works as a consultant in team building, communication, and empowerment.

Nothing To Lose

A person with nothing to lose is dangerous. My gut check is usually, “what is the risk?” Essentially I am asking myself, “can I afford to lose this?” This is a question we should ask ourselves every time we loan our bike or car to a friend. Forget the car, can you afford to lose the friend? Will you still like them when they don’t fix the car they broke the way you would have? Can you afford to not have your car?

In some senses, this is why the government loans us money to get an education or buy a house, it is in society’s interest for you to have something so valuable you will not want to lose it. This shows up in our relationships with each other. We fear losing the relationship so we hold back, not knowing the other person wants us in all of our glory.

What do we have to lose? Trust. When I look at our community I appreciate how much you trust us. When I look at my personal relationships, I see they are all founded upon trust. Especially when I look to my kids Alex and Olivia, I see how much we are trying to create an understanding of trust. We are discussing a fragile relationship, a thin line that we walk on.

When the trust is lost, we have nothing to lose and we become free. We often call this trust, integrity. Our word is backed up by our actions. How we hold ourselves accountable, is what becomes our integrity. It is our professional standard. It is yoga. It is the union between our mind, body and relationships. As we sail thru this world, trust in your relationships and maintain your integrity when it is challenged. I am conscious that my most valuable asset is trust. As we make changes around here, hold us to that standard. Look around at your own life both personal and professional, if the trust is not there, you have nothing to lose…you are free.

“Now that she had nothing to lose, she was free.” Paulo Coelho

Live Out Of Your Imagination

Stephen Covey Quote I,agination

In some senses, Stephen Covey’s quote defines us. This is how we are building Marin Power Yoga. We are constantly re-imagining what will make this place an amazing space to be in. Yes, we draw from the past. Yes, we try and avoid mistakes we have made and do more of what worked. But yes, we are also trying to find something new, something we have always wanted yet never knew how to describe it.

Why forget the past? The successes and failures do not define us. It is not the past that will determine the future, it is simply part of our experience. As you look to the present moment in your life, create your contribution to the world from the depths of your soul. Figure out what you can give and share that with all of us! You are free!!!

“Live out of your imagination, not your history.” Stephen Covey

Shining Bright In The Night

Picture Quote Moon Khalil Gibran

“We are all like the bright moon, we still have our darker side.” Kahlil Gibran

Looking up at the full moon these last few nights I can’t help but be in awe of the hugeness of it all. As we passed into a full moon, it started rising during the day and as I biked home from yoga at 7:10am I could see it setting. The bigness of it all resonated with me this month. Maybe it is the season, maybe it was the cold weather keeping the sky so clear or maybe it is just me appreciating the moment.

Part of my commitment to myself and our community is appreciating small moments. More than simply recognizing the moment is worthy, consciously acknowledging the awesomeness of it.  This can happen in the middle of a yoga class when all of a sudden you realize you haven’t been present and you dive into the practice with renewed energy, it can also happen sitting in traffic when you notice the view is incredible and you find a way to stop cursing, turn up the music and enjoy being exactly where you are. This is the practice.

How it shows up for each of us is different, but it does show up for us. Interpretation. We can look at the moon on any given night and only see the dark side. The dark side will always be there, it is part of our human nature. We can choose to bring more of the positive energy into everything we do. When you look up at the moon tonight, you decide what you want to see and make a deliberate decision as to how you interpret what you see. Whatever you do, acknowledge that moment and celebrate it!

This is going to be an EPIC year!!!

“Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it.” This quote by Maya Angelou is in many ways about right now.

Thanksgiving is Upon Us

Gratitude Brene Brown

Thanksgiving is upon us! In the past, that has never really meant anything to me other than turkey and stuffing. This year I have made the decision to make this holiday all about gratitude. I have made this Thanksgiving a celebration of all things that I am thankful for. As I am writing this, I am thinking well no kidding isn’t that what it has always been about? Perhaps in theory it has but not in reality, for me anyway. Rather, Thanksgiving has been about “having to cook” and “having to eat.”

That said, how amazing it is to sit and really think about all of the things that we have to be grateful for. I am not simply talking about our homes in Marin or our cars or our new Lulus. I am talking about the fragrance of the flowers, the taste of chocolate on our lips, the smile from a stranger, the warmth of a blanket. The list can go on and on if we allow it. If we really allow ourselves to be present to those “stolen moments” as I call them, the world can really be a perfect place. The challenge then is to be present for these moments and not to let them slip by un-noticed. That is where the practice of yoga comes in.

The opportunity for us to slow down and observe all things around us. What a freaking gift! Soon, instead of complaining about the little things we are simply in awe of even smaller things and soon after that we no longer needs lavish gifts and meals to feel grateful. Soon, a perfect day is something as simple as coffee in bed and walking the dog not necessarily margaritas on a beach in Mexico. Soon a perfect yoga practice is not rocking a handstand but simply feeling your breath move your body.

In summary, I implore you to find as many “stolen moments” as you can and relish in them. Smile when you are experiencing them, maybe even give a shout out or do a spin. Pay homage to all that you are grateful for and maybe you will see the stressors, that can be associated with this time of the year, be replaced with the magic of the season.

Sat Nam Yogis and a very Happy Thanksgiving!

“I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness – it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”
-Brene Brown

Connecting To What Matters

We have been open for exactly 6 months today and I am lit up with energy. We have taught over 700 amazing yoga classes and slowly but surely our community is growing! Recently our staff did a leadership program led by Teo and Oli from EXLI, we discussed in depth our values and how our values show up in our lives. Underneath the discussion, I found myself thinking about MPY and wondering if our values are showing up in classes, programming and our business.

For the most part, I was blown away to see that the teachers and team making MPY possible are reflecting our group values in everything we do. As I dug deeper, I found myself struggling with the question of when to say no and when to say yes. It is simply to easy to say YES and rarely do I find myself saying NO. The easy obvious answer was simply say NO more often. I resent easy answers, I felt some resistance and sat with the issue for a few days.

What came up for me is that I really need to become conscious of what I am saying YES to. For the last week I have been practicing by evaluating everything that requires a YES or NO. I am not passing judgment, nor am I simply saying NO. Rather I am bringing awareness to my decision making and looking at what the outcome is. I don’t have any real answers here, just questioning and acknowledging the strength that comes from increased awareness.

Every now and then you have to Connect To What Really Matters…YOURSELF. The relationship we develop with ourself is what enables us to connect to others. The sunset is one of those magical times in our day when we see all of life around us shift, reminding us that we can change as well. As we dive deeper into ourselves, we create the change that ripples across the universe. See you on your mat!

West Coast Stephen Covey Quote

You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage—pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.”
― Stephen Covey
