Speak Your Truth and Find Your Power

“Speaking is the most powerful truth we all have.” Oprah – This quote from Oprah describes what being a yoga teacher is about! You will learn physical alignment, anatomy, teaching skills, sequencing, philosophy and meditation…all a great framework for you to speak your truth in what you feel in your body and express thru your heart!

For more information on our Yoga Teacher Training starting on January 22, 2018, check out our website at http://marinpoweryoga.com and read thru the application for all of the details. You will finish the training ready and able to teach Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Yin! The training is located in San Anselmo at Marin Power Yoga and is led by Grace You, Wendy Wilkinson and Araceli Santos!

Getting Lucky in 2018 Takes Consistent Practice

Are you looking for secrets to success in 2018? Is there a magic pill or change in diet or mantra that will give you everything you want in 2018? Probably not.

The secret to success at Marin Power Yoga is Consistent Practice!!! Look at our classes and the schedule and commit to a consistent practice, whether it is meditation, TRX, TKO, BootCamp, Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga or Yin Yoga. You can do any combination of classes, do them regularly! You will see our teachers work hard to show up regularly to their classes, they do this because their growth is tied to consistency also. When our teachers show up regularly to their classes, they become better teachers. Our teachers are students, their habits for success are what they have learned by experience. We ask our teachers to lead by example, so that you know we are living our truth!

Why do we have so many choices? Because we like to do a lot of different activities. We added TKO (kick boxing) in because we love Cardio! Our TRX and BootCamp classes bring pure Strength, Dance brings Cardio and Joy into our workouts…Yoga is the balance where we find, Strength, Flexibility and Stability! Try all of our classes, design a schedule you can keep to 85% of the time and show up to class…we will take care of the rest!

Yoga Teacher Training starts January 22 2018

Our 2018, 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training starts January 22, 2018! Yes, you will be certified with Yoga Alliance, but more importantly you will be qualified and capable of teaching Power Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Yin Yoga classes!!!

Why do Yoga Teacher Training? Because it is a great way to learn more about yourself. Yes, you will learn about the physical practice, the philosophical and mystical practice, anatomy, sequencing, alignment and teaching methodology. That is the structure we use to deepen our relationship with our self. By the end of the training, you will be able to teach private classes, small group classes and have the skills to build those classes into large classes!

If you are interested in finding out more, the application is on the front page of the Marin Power Yoga website at http://www.marinpoweryoga.com – you can also message me at jamie@marinpoweryoga.com

Yoga and Running

By Laura Richard

At first, yoga and running may not seem to have much in common; one consists of a variety of poses that take place on a mat as part of a personal practice, the other is a single repetitive motion across space often with some kind of competitive objective. And yet, for me, as an experienced ultra-marathoner they have become mutually constitutive. Actually, that’s not entirely true: While I can’t imagine logging consistent, injury-free miles without some kind of regular yoga, I CAN see myself in a flourishing yoga practice with no running at all.

Many runners “resort” to yoga as a physical solution to loosen chronically tight hips and hamstrings. And while overall muscular and joint flexibility bring enormous benefits for maintaining all-over mechanical health, for me, there are other arguably more valuable aspects of a regular yoga practice, especially for those who run on trails. Most obviously, the lunge asanas help develop the strength-to-weight power ratio crucial for hill climbing and descending. But almost as important, is core stability and balance: you need strong abdominals and spinal support for the full body moves and reflexes that technical single-track running demands—especially downhill. And this is developed not just through planks, but also in the many balance poses that recruit all of the smaller muscles and require your full, relaxed attention. After all, moving smoothly over rough, varied, and unpredictable terrain—and being able to catch yourself mid-fall after the inevitable trips and toe-grabs—is every bit essential to finishing a race as aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

And whether you are holding a bound Low Lunge or Dancer, or trying to get through a rough patch in a trail race, breath and focus are key. Cultivating awareness and control over our inhales and exhales can help to transcend physical discomfort and maintain positivity. Just as it seems counterintuitive to relax, breathe, and push up when we feel we are falling out of a pose, so too can lightness best serve our running. Even on the toughest stretches of trail, practicing landing gently, quietly, and quickly reduces the pounding and brings mental levity—it’s the running equivalent of how we want to live our lives on this earth: with as much spiritual joy and as little physical impact as possible.

With gratitude,

Laura

Would you like to “yoga your life” by bringing more flexibility and flow into those areas of life where you experience “tightness“ and resistance? Come to our alternating Wednesday evening series to pause from life’s rush, increase clarity, and acquire tools to shift undesired patterns.

The first part of each session will help you get quiet, notice what’s going on deep down and get more in touch with your challenges, yearnings and reality. The latter part of each evening will be dedicated to identifying and practicing tools and methods to help each person make positive shifts off the mat. Meditation, journaling, small group exercises, larger group work and more will be incorporated.

Michael Lipson, an experienced executive coach and personal growth practitioner, will facilitate in an open style for participants to co-create how the group evolves. Singles and couples, younger or older, are all welcome. You are encouraged to attend as many of the 6 sessions of this initial series as possible, since consistent practice accelerates ones growth in all yoga, whether on or off the mat.

You will deepen your relationship with yourself and learn techniques for sharing your authentic self with your professional and personal world. Wear comfortable clothes, each session will include a short meditation, journaling and discussion.

Cost of Series is a minimum donation of $100 to The Cedars.

Your Yoga Mat

Your yoga mat is the least important part of your yoga practice and the most important. When I am feeling cynical I remind myself nobody used yoga mats 2,000 years ago nor did they use them 100 years ago. Why spend so much money on a rubber yoga mat?

The primary reason is comfort. A nice yoga mat is more enjoyable to practice on. I love the Lulu yoga mats because I never slip on the mat, I feel steady and that gives me the confidence to go a little bit further in my practice. Slipping on a yoga mat can be dangerous to little muscles, more relevantly you should not slip on your yoga mat!

We discover amazing things on our mat…from how to heal an injury to how our body works to clearing our minds and feeling good again. Make sure you have a decent mat and do the work to find a consistent yoga practice, it will improve the quality of your life.

*yes, we do sell Lululemon yoga mats at The Shop.

New App is Coming

Our new Mobile App has been submitted to Apple and we are waiting for approval! It has been a week and one more week is normal. Yes, accessing our new software from a website is a pain, from a different perspective it is amazing that you can see a schedule online, have updates to the minute and see a teacher’s bio and when they are teaching!

I keep thinking about how when we first did a Mobile app it seemed crazy and it took us what felt like forever to get people to download the app. 4 years later, the Mobile device is what most of us use for everything!!! This is a great time for me to practice patience, kindness and perseverance…while checking the app store twice a day to see if we have been approved!!!

95 classes a week, a spectacular TKO program and wide variety of yoga classes from Yin to Gentle to Power…Make your week amazing with us!

Working Together Sucks

It’s true and we all know it. The hardest most painful projects in school were group projects. It takes all of us working together, collaborating to create positive change. Be part of the solution.

All you have to do is sign into Next Door and you can witness demeaning and insulting conversations between neighbors and bitter insults with no intention of creating solutions. Your voice and actions count. Consider taking the Pledge here: https://elevatethediscussion.org

Back To School

We are going Back To School. We have launched new software to more effectively run Marin Power Yoga. If you already have an account, set your new Password Here. We are embracing the season of change and learning how to find our accounts, classes, sign in for classes. It is just as painful for us as it is for you. There is also something exciting about it. What if we can communicate better? What if we can have a better relationship with each other? What if our Core Values are the Foundation of Everything we do?

We are really excited about offering new classes and special series from TKO Fundamentals with Jordan to Meditation Workshops with Casey to The Pulse with Tiana and TurboKick with Natalie and Full Moon Yin classes with a Live SoundBath from Jamie and Gabe to a Deepen Your Power Leadership Series with Michael! We have 95 classes each week created to improve your health and increase your connection to your self and our community!

We are all capable of learning and we all learn in different ways. Part of our search is based in understanding how we each learn and applying that technique to varied information. This is where our growth is. We learn from each other. One of our Members, Jeff Hopkins, helped us by creating a document on how to update your credit card in your KarmaSoft account.  Another Member, Trish Owen, shared this link for resetting your password. We are stronger because of our talents and combined skills!!! Thank you to all of our Members and Guests growing with us thru this!

As you navigate the season of change whether it is saying goodbye to friends and kids, starting a new grade or school, or starting a new relationship, choose the words with which you speak to yourself kindly. Acknowledge what you are doing and believe in the positive outcomes you want to create. Your Community Is Here. We Believe In You. I have to tell myself this all of the time. I take very seriously the Trust you put in us and I commit to getting better at what we do every single day. We Are In This Life Together.

As Bill said to me the other day, Peace is an action. As is Love. We all must take action, practice what we want to create. I encourage you to start with what you can do. Pick up some trash on the street when you are walking, acknowledge your neighbor and hug people who need to know you love them. We must actively create the world we want to live in. Start Now.

Your Summer Vacation

This your Summer Vacation. It doesn’t matter whether you are working or not. You get this Summer. This chance to take the hike, explore a new beach, visit Healdsburg or Yountville or Sonoma or Napa, go out to dinner in San Francisco or simply take the Ferry to the City as a “treat.”

Everything slows down in Summer…except for the fun! Whether you bike up Mt. Tam, Hike to Cascade Falls or to the top of Mt. Baldy, run the Dipsea or try a new Yoga class or TRX or BootCamp. You get this Summer. This chance to find some more freedom, to re-invent yourself and to live a little bit better.

What is the secret? Nike told us years ago…Just Do It. Make the Plans, Break the Plans, Create the Plans! The only thing in the way is you!!! Give your self space to experience something new. You’ve got this summer!!!

Remember Where You Came From

Looking back, we have come a long way! It took 6 months just to get our  lease, the landlord was ok with yogis, but not so thrilled with the idea of hot yoga. We negotiated and talked and came to an agreement that achieved both or our goals, we installed a floor and painted and opened a few weeks after signing. We started with 25 power yoga classes on the schedule, 5 of them 6am classes!!! 4 years later we have 95 classes a week! Yes, we have 40 Power Yoga Classes and added to the mix are Gentle Yoga, Yin, Meditation, Stop Drop and Dance, TRX, TKO (Kick Boxing) and we are testing Turbo Kick and Zumba!!!

How else have we grown in the last 4 years? We have teachers who have babies, Members have fallen out of love and found love, we have fought cancer and strokes, raised thousands of dollars for our local schools and national non-profits and the Africa Yoga Project, created a Yoga alliance certified Teacher Training Program for 200 hr and 300 hr. yoga teachers. We launched a Power Cycle program and killed the program. Our failures have been just as real as our successes!

What are we working on now? We are launching the Marin Yoga Foundation this month! The purpose of this Foundation is to provide Yoga, Meditation, Fitness, Leadership and Training to underserved women and children in Marin County. We want to extend the benefits of what we experience to our greater community, to people who can’t financially afford luxuries such as pre-emptive healthcare and who are willing to do the work. In some ways this is the biggest thing we have ever done. In other ways, this is all we do.

What is it like to be finally entering kindergarten? We still make mistakes, we rarely draw in between the lines, we are just as likely to fall down as we are to hit a home run and we have so much to learn. We have to face our fears, real and imaginary, every time we start something new. We have to get up every time we are knocked down. We have faith there is light at the end of the tunnel, especially when it seems impossibly dim. We believe in the power of Kindness, Compassion and LOVE.

As we finish our 4th year, I am so grateful to our team of teachers and support staff who keep Marin Power Yoga evolving, our Members who witness us change in real time, all of the guest teachers who have taken time out of their lives to share their knowledge and experience with us, our amazing Town of San Anselmo (from fellow residents to the local government) and most of all to the Littles – the kids who remind us of the importance of improving our Health and of living a life of Service and Joy.

We Are Stronger Together!!!

Tonya’s art conveys energy and passion balancing color and dynamic strokes!

You can see the amazing painting below hanging in the window at Marin Power Yoga – The Shop!

Tonya Leitz is showing her art work at Marin Power Yoga – The Shop in San Anselmo, California, in the heart of Marin County. The address for the shop is 530 San Anselmo Ave, 94960.

Move to Release

I’m sure you have all heard the term, ‘I workout because it’s cheaper than therapy’. Ain’t that the truth?

After a workout you feel better. It doesn’t matter what kind of workout it is, just as long as there’s movement. When you move, things shift. Energy begins to flow and pump through your body and creates a pulse that emanates from your being. With this movement comes sensation and awareness.

Have you ever broken down during a workout? Whether it’s cried, screamed or laughed? Movement is the cause and your reaction is the affect. Our bodies store our emotions. Physical, mental and emotional traumas get stuck inside us. Our skin is like a capsule, keeping all of that bottled up nicely for us. If we don’t get them out, they will cause major issues; muscle tension, clouded judgement, even disease, to name a few. Have you ever broken down the word ‘disease’? DIS-EASE: a body not at ease.

We need to take better care of ourselves on every level. When you workout, of course do it for the physical change and strength, but take it a step further. Do it to release your traumas. Scream, cry, laugh LET IT OUT!!! You will feel so much better and your mind, body and soul will thank you.

I will leave you with this…..

“Tears, movement, and sound are part of your emotional digestive system. They help release blocked energy in your body. Moving through pain by feeling your way through it is ‘the pain that ends the pain'”. -unknown

Tuning In To Music

Music is the culture of Revolution. It gives voice to the masses, it communicates what is in our hearts. The subject of music is widely discussed in yoga studios. Should we only play Indian music honoring the past (did they even play music in their yoga classes 4,000 years ago), should we avoid music and observe noble silence, does music interfere with our thoughts, does the music guide us on our journey, is the music obscure enough, too much pop, too loud, too quiet?

I love music. In some senses, I hear music everywhere I go. The whirling rhythm of bike wheels spinning, the back beat of car doors slamming, the wailing of a child cutting across the soundscape like a Gibson Hollow Body Guitar. When I lay my head on my pillow and the silence becomes overwhelming, I hear songs playing. No voices telling me to do things, just music guiding the rhythm of my life.

When looking at sound options for Marin Power Yoga, I listened to a variety of speakers and talked with experts. I knew we needed the voice to be clear and crisp, with throbbing bass underneath. I knew we needed to be energized by the depth of the kick drum and motivated by the crack of the snare. Our souls vibrate at their own frequency, guiding our bodies and freeing our minds. It is our choice to hear the music, to listen carefully, to understand the deeper meaning.

Somewhere along the line, yoga teachers became DJs. We monitor and control all aspects of the ambiance in the room, from the lights to the heat to the music being played. It is your choice to let go of control and dive into the experience, or to see the lights as too bright or too dim and the music as too loud or inappropriate. Whether you find Bob Marley in Savasana offensive or the pulsating bass of Michael Franti annoying, you always have the option to let go and allow the music to move you.

There is a time for silence and it has it’s place in every class. As you listen carefully you will find the silence deafening, whether it is your pulsating heartbeat blowing your ear drums out or the sound of a fire truck passing thru town or a little Huey Lewis reminding us it’s hip to be square. Stop fighting the music and start moving with the rhythm of life the envelopes your soul.

Below is a link to one of my favorite playlists of Michael Franti & Spearhead Songs. Best if played LOUD.

Change is Good…Right?

The only constant in life is change. Whether we feel it’s good or bad, it’s all in how we perceive it.

Change can be liberating. It can lift baggage and weight from our shoulders. The freedom that can come from change is invigorating. It’s euphoric. Creating space for new pathways for us to journey down. New adventures are always fun!

However, change can be scary. It can alter our emotions, cause rifts in our thinking and create painful marks on our hearts. Anxiety gets heightened, panic goes up and if we don’t get a hold on it, it can turn into depression. Being able to recognize what is happening in the body and the mind during change can be the difference between a long internal battle, or a short struggle.

How I have overcome my anxieties and depression (which can be a roller coaster) has been through the practice of yoga. Specifically through the moving meditation (asanas) and the breath work (pranayama). Every movement is a reminder to breathe deep. To reconnect with myself. To notice what is happening inside of me and to be ok with it. Creating change and space in the body to allow the journey to unfold. When I practice yoga I will sometimes “hit” a break-through; a pose, a deeper engaged breath or even a new thought. This is the change I seek. A new path has unfolded for me.

So if you struggle from anxiety, depression or any obstacles, know you are not alone. Step onto your mat, take a deep breath, envision the path before you and embrace the change.

Donating to the ACLU

We have been doing a lot of fundraising this year! Our first official fundraiser of the year was for the ACLU! As a community, we raised over $1,400 for the Northern California Chapter between cash raised, checks mailed in and online donations. If you are motivated to help protect all people, you can donate here: https://www.aclunc.org/donate – THANK YOU!!!

Why are we active in politics and fundraising? It starts with the complex yogic philosophy of Ahimsa, commonly described as Do No Harm. We recognize that if we do not take action to support people, they will be harmed. In other words, by not doing anything you can cause a lot of harm. We are Yogis, we take action to help ourselves and everyone else that we can. Sometimes this shows up as picking up a piece of glass on the sidewalk, other times by helping someone across the street. We are going to do our best to create awareness and “put our money where our mouth is” and raise money to support causes that actively help people and especially women. Be The Change.

3 Lessons From Trolls

I had a sick day Sunday. Nothing was wrong. I woke up, had a couple of bagels, posted something on Facebook and passed out. I opened my eyes a little after 2pm and mumbled to Amy that I needed a sub and slept for a few more hours. I hate missing my class and I kind of hate sleeping. Maybe it was a sickness, maybe it was basic depression.

Amy and Olivia wanted to watch Trolls, they rented it and watched it while I was sleeping and were already eager to watch it again (3 short hours later).
I Love Trolls.

Glad we cleared that up. Seriously, I laughed, I cried, I remembered why we tell stories, why we believe and most important of all I felt BETTER.

3  Lessons from Trolls

  1. Hug More – Yes, every 30 minutes sounds like a great minimum requirement. It doesn’t matter if you need a hug or you have a hug to give, everybody wins.
  2. Happiness Is Inside ALL Of Us. You have everything you need to be happy. Let go of all of that crazy shit you say in your head and allow yourself to be happy. There is nothing you can eat, buy or be given that will make you happier than you can make yourself (awkward?).
  3. Sing and Dance When Ever Possible. This really should be obvious to all of us by now. WTF are we so boring, reserved and proper for? It took so much magic and incredible timing to get us here, right now. The fastest way to feel that energy is to SING and/or DANCE! You always feel better when you are dancing.

*This starts with me, with you, with all of us. We have to choose to be happy, to take actions that create joy in our lives. You can start by joining us at Stop Drop and Dance with Grace. Come Dancing with us and DJ Gavin Hardkiss at Love Won Another on Saturday Night at 19 Broadway. Better yet, Save the Date May 13th, 2017 we are having a Dance Party at the Log Cabin. Tickets are limited and $20. Start With You!

Slowing Down

“Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.” Wayne Dyer

You don’t have to look very hard to see the signs that you need to slow down. For me it shows up physically first in the form of a sore low back or a twitch or swelling. Then my emotions scatter and I struggle to find my kind voice with myself and with others. It is quickly a lose-lose situation, followed by feelings of guilt and inadequacy.

Why after all these years do I need to be hit in the head by the signs, wouldn’t you think by now I could see them 50 feet away and prepare myself a little? Maybe I did see the signs, maybe I didn’t believe them or maybe I didn’t want to believe them. Either way, the signs were there.

What does it mean to slow down? For all of us it is different. Some need to discover Yin Yoga and find out what it is like to breathe in an uncomfortable position for 2 minutes. Some need to sweat, shake and stand on their hands for everything to get quiet and feel ok. Some need to meditate for 30 seconds, others for 30 minutes. In some senses, it is the same for all of us…one hour in the day to take care of ourselves.

It doesn’t really matter what you do, as long as what you do, is for you. Take a walk or make it a hike or even a run. Bike thru town on your cruiser or climb the mountain so you can fly down it appreciating your choice of hardtail or full suspension. Do 40 laps at the pool or 9 holes at the club. Find your core in TRX or unleash you inner demon in TKO. You can find your yoga practice on the mat or everywhere you go. It starts with you.

Slow Down. Figure out what that means for you and bring more of it into your life. Or bring less of it. You know what I mean.
